This box set of Whitesnake’s BOX 'O' SNAKES: THE SUNBURS YEARS 1978-1982 collects together all studio and live albums, two previously unreleased BBC concerts, a replica of the 7” white vinyl Snakebite EP, a DVD and a 90-page book with interviews and previously unseen photos and rare memorabilia. It was released on 11th July 2011 by Sunburst Records and EMI Records. Many unpublished photos and rare memorabilia from Bernie Marsden’s personal collection. The CDs are just the regular track listings, not the latest extended editions, albeit in mini LP cardboard covers. Two of the CDs are new – the 1979 and 1980 Reading Rock Festivals broadcasts from the BBC. The box does have a DVD in, with promotional videos and some footage off the BBC. BOX 'O' SNAKES: THE SUNBURS YEARS 1978-1982 documents the band's work in the legendary blues line-up of Micky Moody and Bernie Marsden, at the most creative and exciting phase in the band's history. In addition to the vinyl replicas of the albums, the box also contains the live CD Live At Hammersmith, which was only released in Japan. Of course if you don’t have the albums and fancy a quick catch up then it will make a fine pressie. It is limited to just 5,000 copies world wide.

This is where the foray into the band's early sunburst years ends, which changed with the deal with Geffen Records and the album Slide It In and paved the way for Whitesnake to achieve its greatest successes. Regardless of commercial mega-successes, all the MTV hits and platinum albums - David & Co. certainly had the greatest artistic potential in the band's history in their so-called Mark II line-up. After all, you must not forget that 3/5 of Deep Purple were at work here and the Marsden/Moody duo were certainly the strongest guitar duo on the hard rock scene at the time, alongside Tipton/Downing. Even if they had a strong bluesy influence. Whitesnake's early work is symbolic of 70s hard rock - independent, full of wild creativity and absolutely timeless. If you want to derive something positive from the split of Deep Purple, then it is the fact that two absolute giants of hard music, Rainbow and Whitesnake, rose from their ashes and have given us a cornucopia of divine music to date. And this is exactly what this BOX 'O' SNAKES: THE SUNBURS YEARS 1978-1982 preserves in an impressive way, making it a pleasure for every hard rock fan who wants to immerse themselves in the world of the white snake.
