August always makes think of upstate New York, specifically the town of Saratoga. Going to high school just a few miles from the town, people would spend many August days at the beautiful horse track and hot nights in the state park watching bands from all over. The Allman Brothers Band in their latter day lineup here in their '94 version you get Dickie Betts and the thunderous Allen Woody on bass along with the always amazing Haynes. Just a few ours south of Saratoga in the odd, revamped, Woodstock '94. The '94 festival started on the added date of Friday, August 12, but The Allman Brothers Band performed on the 14th. The band featured the legendary Gregg Allman on organ (and acoustic guitar) with guitarist Dickey Betts, drummers Butch Trucks and Jaimoe, and the additional strength of guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody. A blistering 80-minute set included the classic cuts, then three tunes from their then current Where It All Begins album. Pro-muddy sound (typical for Woodstock) which gets a little better after the opening "Statesboro Blues" and "Blue Skies", if you want to skip ahead do not pass "Jessica" which is the clear highlight of this set. The classic Allmans appearance in its entirety in August 1969 at the time of the original Woodstock Festival in upstate New York, The Allman Brothers were barely out of nappies. They had however travelled to New York from their hometown of Macon, Georgia. The Allman Brothers Band were in town to record their eponymous debut album, to be released in November of '69 on the new Capricorn label. 25 years and the lion's share of one tumultuous but extraordinary career later, and the story was a very different one. The Allmans now featuring Gregg Allman alongside other founding members Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe, plus Warren Haynes and Allen Woody were asked to perform at Woodstock 94 (subtitled Two More Days Of Peace & Music ) on Sunday 14th August, when the group played a storming set running 80 minutes, alongside original Woodstock performers Crosby, Stills & Nash, Santana and Joe Cocker. Performing largely classic The Allman Brothers Band tunes, including of course, ''Jessica'', ''Midnight Rider'', ''Whipping Post'' and ''Blue Sky'', the group bravely played two cuts from then new album Where It All Begins and including that ''Soulshine'' which would later become a strong point of Haynes himself solo and with Gov't Mule. This CD features The Allman Brothers Band's complete set from Woodstock 94, which, released here for the FIRST TIME, will delight and excite every last Allmans fan still flying the flag for these pioneering southern rock stalwarts.
