Warren Haynes- LIVE AT EMERSON COLLEGE BOSTON NOVEMBER ’93- 2CD- 2015-

''CLAPTON IS GOD'' was what the London kids wrote on the walls around Harrow On The Hill back in the late 1960s. They should have waited a few decades... In 1993 Warren Haynes recorded a live concert (without an audience) for WERS-FM Radio in Boston, which is now finally being made available to us in excellent form after such a long time. "Birth Of The Mule" is an early Gov't Mule song not featured on this record. But if the birth of the donkey took place in 1994, then this concert must undoubtedly describe the act of procreation of the mule - so we are witnessing a most sensual moment in the world of rock music. At the pinnacle of their modern career, The Allman Brothers Band had just recorded their legendary sets for "An Evening With The Allman Brothers" and delivered unquestionable proof that a guitar duo consisting of Dickey Betts and Warren Haynes could hardly exist in this universe. Warren decided to create a bluesy rock offshoot from the cultural roots of The Allmans, which the world today celebrates as the Gov't Mule and probably the best live band on the planet. With the wild rebelliousness of the just thirty-three-year-old rocker and the necessary aggressiveness that grew out of it, the master banged his solos with a passionate power and electrifying energy on the strings of his Gibson back in November 1993. Rarely has Warren gone full throttle like that, and God knows what that's saying about the man. Even then, almost a year before the Mule was founded, there was a congenial musician who – strangely enough – only joined the band years after the tragic death of Allen Woody, none other than our beloved keyboard wisp Danny Louis. Lincoln Schleifer on bass and Steve Holley on drums are brilliant in the rhythm section, almost as if the donkey was already trotting through the steppes back then.

At first a little more attached to hard-hitting soul this ''50 percent mule'' grooves into a hot rock session of hot Soul, driving Beat and overwhelming Blues. Blues and Soul Rock music with a lot of feeling for rhythm and tremendous build-ups, cool down to the last note and full of inspiring improvisation. It's mule spirit and just when Warren breaks away from all categories, then the spirit of the donkey washes over us. Just listen to "The Same Thing" or the heartbreaking "Gambler's Roll". But with all the intensity of the incomparably energetic solos, Warren proved even then that he was no less convincing as a singer than as a guitarist. The deep devotion and empathy comes across in Warren's voice more authentically than in any other. And when, as in "Blue Radio", it culminates from a withdrawn rhythm into an almost unbelievable string crescendo, then it drives us muleheads (and certainly not only us) a few hidden tears into the corners of our eyes and brings us into ecstatic movements that our orthopaedists will have to treat later. Warren's music might be bad for old rockers' bones, but it's good for their souls. The unpolished raw mix of the album with an absolute emphasis on Warren's guitar and vocals gives the disc that earthy, dirty sound that suits this music so well. You really feel like you are in a live concert. Not only does the mulehead get what he needs with this recording, rock music has never sounded fresher and more brilliant than in this magical hour and a half with the master himself. Nothing and nobody is like Gov't Mule - and Gov't Mule is nothing without Warren Haynes.
