AN EVENING WITH THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND: 2nd SET is a live album by the American rock group The Allman Brothers Band. It was recorded in 1992 and 1994, and released in May 9, 1995. The recording of "Jessica" included on the album won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance at the 38th Annual Grammy Awards in 1996. The Allman Brothers Band's fifth live release in 25 years, cut during 1994 in Raleigh, NC, and at the Garden State Arts Center in New Jersey, is a high-water mark in their Epic Records catalog. If anything, they're even better here than they were on the earlier An Evening With The Allman Brothers Band, the old material getting fresh new approaches - the band was on for both nights, and presented sets, including an acoustic version of "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed" and "Jessica", that soared and flowed, especially Dickey Betts and Warren Haynes' guitars. What's more, the clarity of the recording and the volume at which it was recorded make this a most rewarding 70 minutes of live music on a purely technical level - you can practically hear the action on the guitars during the acoustic set. It won't replace Live At The Fillmore East or the live portions of Eat A Peach, but it deserves a place on the shelf not very far from them.
PERSONNEL: Gregg Allman – Hammond B-3 organ, acoustic guitar, lead vocals; Dickey Betts – lead and rhythm guitar, acoustic guitar, lead vocals; Jaimoe – drums, percussion, background vocals; Butch Trucks – drums, tympani, background vocals; Warren Haynes – lead, rhythm, and slide guitar, acoustic guitar, lead and background vocals; Allen Woody – bass, fretless bass, 6 string bass, acoustic bass, background vocals; Marc Quinones – congas, percussion, drums; Paul T. Riddle – drums.
A kind of companion piece to the 1992 An Evening With The Allman Brothers Band, this compilation of live shows from 1992 and 1994 isn't as epochal as Live At The Fillmore East, but it's an excellent set in its own right. At the very least it demonstrates why the reconstituted Allman Brothers became such an in-demand concert attraction in the '90s. Miraculously, even though some of the songs here had been in the band's repertoire for as long as 30 years, there isn't a rote gesture on SECOND SET. In fact, some of the performances (notably the Bob Diddley-beat jam section of "No One To Run With") are downright inspired. Most revelatory moment - an unplugged acoustic version of the epic instrumental, "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed." This live opus closes the Allman Brothers' renewed period of success during the early '90s and features a number of blues standards and great performances. Released in 1995, this outstanding live opus closes the Allman Brothers' New Testament in dramatic fashion. Old-timers might cry blasphemy, but the band's resurgence in the early 1990s came remarkably close to recapturing the glory of their seemingly insurmountable peak in the late 1960s and early 1970s. With five years in the band under his belt, slide guitarist Warren Haynes had truly come into his own, magically interacting with Dickey Betts and serving up scorching leads that might have made even Duane look twice. The standard blues covers like "You Don't Love Me" and "The Same Thing" receive wonderful treatments, and Haynes' own "Soul Shine" is a worthy addition to the Allman songbook, but the centerpiece is the acoustic "Liz Reed," which matches the band's greatest performances, new testament or old.
