Blues Traveler- FOUR- CD- 1994- A&M Records, Inc./PolyGram Group Canada Inc.- 73145402652997- 400 grn
FOUR (stylized as 'four') is the fourth album by American rock band Blues Traveler, released on September 13, 1994. Blues Traveler broke into the mainstream following the release of four. FOUR peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and is most known for its hits "Run-Around" and "Hook", which charted at No. 8 and 23, respectively, on the Billboard Hot 100. Both songs also charted in the top 20 on the Mainstream Rock and Modern Rock charts. The album is certified as 6× Platinum (6 million copies sold in the U.S.A.). "Run-Around" won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group. This fourth album from the New York's Blues Traveler finally brought their harmonica-based blues riffs into the public eye. Indeed, "Run-Around" spent nearly a year on the Billboard singles chart. Harpman/vocalist John Popper moves easily between uptempo, rock-based tracks like "Stand" and "Crash Burn." The hidden gem here, however, is the love-struck ballad "Just Wait." Often categorized with post-Dead jam acts such as Phish, Blues Traveler isn't immune from performance excesses. But when it comes to recording, they keep it concise and always interesting. If you've heard the name and want to know what all the hoopla is about, FOUR is a great starting point.
PERSONNEL: Brendan Hill – percussion, drums; Chan Kinchla – electric and acoustic guitar, mandolin, backing vocals; John Popper – vocals, harmonica, 12-string guitar; Bobby Sheehan – bass guitar, backing vocals; Adam Brody – backing vocals; Warren Haynes – slide guitar; Bashiri Johnson – percussion; Chuck Leavell – piano, keyboards; Jono Manson – vocals; Paul Shaffer – keyboards; Pete Kovachevich – sitar, tambura.
FOUR is not a terrible album and certainly not the worst in Blues Traveler's arsenal, but it does not deserve the praise that its commercial success would suggest. Lacking the rootsier edge of Save His Soul, FOUR finds Blues Traveler retreating to their standard blues-boogie formula, with mixed results. Of course, there are some fine songs here -- including their breakthrough hit single, "Run-Around" - but too often the band sounds like it's coasting. FOUR is a solid record, but it shows signs that the band's formula may be wearing thin. "Hook" is an all-time amazing beautiful gorgeous wonderful song. "Run-Around" is pretty good, and "The Mountain Wins Again" is worth listening to once a decade. The rest of the album fails hard. The production is way too dry for their blues-rock jam band numbers, and they aren't very good anyway. It gets particularly bad when they try to sound tough. Overall, there are just no other songs on here besides ''Hook'' and ''Run-Around''. This is still a fun record that is worth your time if you happen to be an appreciator of pop-based blues rock with some jamming thrown. But the music and hook are so good, and the lyrics witty enough in spite of themselves with one of the funnest-to-sing-along-with bits in all of music in the bridge after the harmonica solo. The busy bass line (R.I.P. Bobby Sheehan), drums and rhythm guitar wend within and around each other and become a single ethereal magical whole (based around the chords to Pachelbel's Canon) that you could just crawl into and sleep in. It really is magic.
