The Allman Brothers Band- SEVEN TURNS- CD- 1990/2008-
- Sony Music Entertainment Inc./SPV GmbH/Yellow Label- 693723916422- 400 grn
SEVEN TURNS is the ninth studio album by The Allman Brothers Band, released in July 3, 1990. Their first studio album since Brothers Of The Road in 1981, it was well-received, and peaked at #53. Hit singles were "Good Clean Fun", "Seven Turns", and "It Ain't Over Yet". The Allman Brothers Band broke up for the second time in 1982. They got back together in 1989. SEVEN TURNS was the first album recorded by the re-formed band. The instrumental track "True Gravity" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance at the 33rd Annual Grammy Awards in 1991. The Allman Brothers Band’s comeback album, and their best blues-based outing since Idlewild South that restored a lot of their reputation. With Tom Dowd running the session, and the group free to make the music they wanted to, they ended up producing this bold, rock-hard album, made up mostly of songs by Dickey Betts with contributions by new keyboardman Johnny Neel and lead guitarist Warren Haynes, almost every one of them a winner. Apart from the rippling opening number, “Good Clean Fun,” which he co-authored, Gregg Allman’s contribution is limited to singing and the organ, but the band seem more confident than ever, ripping through numbers like “Low Down Dirty Mean,” “Shine It On,” and “Let Me Ride” like they were inventing Blues-Rock here, and the Ornette Coleman-inspired “True Gravity” is their best instrumental since “Jessica.”
PERSONNEL: Gregg Allman – Hammond B-3 organ; lead vocals, backup vocals; Dickey Betts – electric guitar, acoustic guitar, National resonator guitar, lead vocals; Jaimoe – drums, percussion; Butch Trucks – drums, timpani; Warren Haynes – electric guitar; lead vocals, backup vocals; Johnny Neel – piano, Wurlitzer organ, synthesizer, harmonica; backup vocals; Allen Woody – bass guitar; Mark Morris – percussion; Duane Betts – guitar.
Ultimately, the time off and the altered lineup is exactly what the group needed. SEVEN TURNS stays true to the Southern Rock feeling, dual guitar approach, and vocals The Allman Brothers are known for, but strives to create something different - music that builds on their past successes but also brings aging southern rock to a modern audience. The most notable change to their lineup comes with the addition of Warren Haynes on guitar. Finding a guitarist that can stand toe-to-toe with Dickey Betts is no easy task but Haynes does a great job with his role in the group. True to the group’s style, the two can often be heard playing in harmony and building off each other, as seen most clearly on “True Gravity”. Haynes has his own way of playing which does not involve filling any shoes. He makes little attempt to copy, but blends well into each track. With the rest of the supporting cast on board, SEVEN TURNS is the best work the group has produced since Brothers And Sisters. As expected, Gregg Allman handles most of the vocal work on SEVEN TURNS with two tracks covered by Betts. What comes as a surprise is hearing Haynes on lead vocal for “Loaded Dice,” one of the albums finest. As a smoother, more clear vocalist, Haynes adds a new facet to the group with both his guitar and voice. Other highlights include the instrumental jam “True Gravity,” the rock-infused “Good Clean Fun,” and the bluesy “Low Down And Mean.” There are lots of blues elements scattered throughout SEVEN TURNS, much in The Allman Brothers style. Expect a Southern Rock sounding album that does not copy any of its predecessors. Similarities include only style of play and track names that should be included on Win, Lose Or Draw. Thankfully, the tunes on SEVEN TURNS are far superior than most found on that album.
