The Kyle Gass Band- THUNDERING HERD- CD- 2016- Steamhammer/SPV GmbH- 886922707520- 400 grn
Kyle Gass renowned for being not-Jack-Black in Tenacious D keeps himself busy while the other main man is busy being an actor by playing with The Kyle Gass Band, a band dedicated to writing about the real problems in the world. No ham on your sandwich, evil and some guy who you call Uncle Jazz. It’s strange and fun. The album kicks off with a very Classic Rock inspired song called “Cakey” about would be a horny fat chick nicknamed Cakey. The song sounds like something straight out of the 70s and is only one of the many sounds that take place throughout THUNDERING HERD. “Bro Code” straight up sounds like a song written for Tenacious D but ended up used here, a song full of harmonies and to anyone who thought the world needed a song dedicated to the bro code, full of meaning. It’s short and sweet, but it fits in nice in the album. “Hell (Or High Water)” is a more Modern Rock song, slower and about what evil is, whether it be a cruise ship, your gardener or according to this album it’s more likely a sandwich without any ham. It’s a strange tune, no ham. Probably the weirdest song is “Uncle Jazz”, a very jazzy zazzy song and some cat (jazz slang) who can really swing. Basically what you’ll gather from this song is The Kyle Gass Band have written a Jazz tune dedicated to a guy who might be an alcoholic pedophile. The Kyle Gass Band is just as strange as you should expect if you came here because of the members. If you’re expecting the new Tenacious D album, this isn’t quite it, the albums lyrics are a bit more real and not quite as humorous. The songs on THUNDERING HERD are fairly creative, but only lyrically and vocally, there aren’t really any songs that stand out because of their instrumentals.

It is hard not to judge an artist by their prior work. How does one not compare Paul McCartney's work in Wings to his work with The Beatles? Is Slash's Snakepit and Guns 'N Roses even on the same playing field? Does John Oates even look the same without his signature Hall & Oates mustache? This comparison becomes even more challenging when the artist was part of the greatest band in the world, Tenacious D. The Kyle Gass Band, was formed in 2011. The Kyle Gass Band's second album, THUNDERING HERD, is good but not great. Because The Kyle Gass Band is half of the greatest band in the world, it is hard not to have high hopes for this album. There is no question that Kyle is a great guitarist with a fantastic ear for melody and songwriting, but THUNDERING HERD tries too hard to be a Tenacious D knock-off. The joke songs, like "Bone" or "Mikey Bray Don't Drink The Water", are either too inside for the casual listener or full of sophomoric sexual innuendos. We are all for dick and fart jokes, but these jokes are not as much fun when the band belts out some awesome rock songs like "Regretta" and "Hell (Or High Water)". Wish the Kyle Gass Band was playing more awesome 90's alternative and less early 00's sketch comedy. Ultimately this is a confused album. If the Kyle Gass Band focused more on the jokes or more on the rock, then the album would be much better. Trying to balance both just lessens their abilities and comes off as nothing more than just a tribute.
