POST-APOCALYPTO is the fourth studio album by American rock band Tenacious D. Produced by bassist John Spiker, it was released in North America on November 2, 2018, by Columbia Records. In addition to core members Jack Black and Kyle Gass, the album also marks the return of John Konesky (electric guitar), Spiker (bass) and Dave Grohl (drums), who have all performed on previous Tenacious D albums. The album features songs and audio snippets from Tenacious D In Post-Apocalypto, the band's animatic series to support the album. POST-APOCALYPTO is the album from acclaimed rock duo and basically everyone's favorite band ever, Tenacious D - comprised of Jack Black and Kyle Gass. The album is the companion to the band's visual project Post-Apocalypto The Series, an original, six-part animated video series from the minds of Tenacious D. Each frame of every episode was hand-drawn by Jack himself, with every character voiced by Black and Gass. True to the title, Post-Apocalypto The Series finds Tenacious D thrust into a world of complete and utter destruction following the drop of an atomic bomb. Surviving the attack in class cinematic fashion (a good old imperishable 1950's refrigerator), the duo quickly learns that new forms of evil have spawned from the blast. One thing becomes apparent - for humanity to prevail, Tenacious D must save the world. All six episodes feature new Tenacious D songs, culminating in a new Tenacious D album - also called POST-APOCALYPTO.

It's best to remember this about POST-APOCALYPTO: it's not a proper Tenacious D album but rather a soundtrack to the group's animated Internet series. Jack Black first mused about an Internet series to Marc Maron way back in 2012, but it took six years to reach fruition, by which time Black and Kyle Gass were pushing their fifties and sixties, respectively -- an ideal time to make the leap from film to animation. POST-APOCALYPTO, which made its debut in September 2018, makes sense as an animated project but less so as an album. Running 21 tracks, most hovering around a minute long, POST-APOCALYPTO is a scattershot collection of sketches, jokes, and song fragments, all telling a story that is reliant on visuals. Some of this can work in isolation - the band's loving mockery of classic rock retains potency; there are some throwaway laughs - but this is the first Tenacious D record that plays as a comedy album, not a musical one. That would be fine, but the problem is that POST-APOCALYPTO often sounds like a recorded version of the audio portion of the animated series, which just raises the question: why listen to this when it's easier - and funnier - to watch the series? Produced by John Spiker, and featuring long-time collaborator Dave Grohl on drums, the POST-APOCALYPTO album is a genius addition to The D's already scintillating catalogue of rock greatness.
