THE PICK OF DESTINY is the second studio album by American comedy rock band Tenacious D, the soundtrack for their feature film of the same name. The album was released on November 14, 2006, through Epic Records. THE PICK OF DESTINY is the band's first studio release in five years, following up their self-titled debut album in 2001. The album was produced by the Dust Brothers' John King, and includes appearances by Meat Loaf, Ronnie James Dio, and Dave Grohl. The cover shows Black and Gass in the clouds, parodying Michelangelo's painting The Creation Of Adam. In between the two's hands is the Pick Of Destiny, the movie's titular artifact, with the devil's arm pictured below them, sticking out from the clouds trying to take the pick.

If you have never heard Tenacious D before. It's like an Epic journey through the kingdom of rock that should be taken in stages. Step One: Go get the first album. Have your freckin socks rocked off. Step Two: Go get this album! Then have your freakin socks rocked off all over again! Perfection cannot be beaten. This is a soundtrack though and is not going to be the same as the last album. The album is short but not where you feel hard done by. And it does not have JB and KG joking about and eating each other's schnitzels or no visits to the drive through etc. This album is full of laughs still however. Maybe the funniest song of all time, "Beelzeboss" is a must listen. Where Dave Ghrol (Satan) and Tenacious D have a rock-off to decide if Kyle is to become Satan's sex slave or if Satan must return to hell. Pure genius! Those who do not know Tenacious D and are offended by swearing - do not listen to this album. I think most people will get the humour though and not be offended at all. It's rock and roll though. It's designed to be offensive. All you need to know is. It's an amazing album. The only fault is its length. However you get enough rock and laughs to keep you more than happy. You will listen to it over and over and like the last album you will pick up new things with every listen. The crucial problem with the album: it's good, but it doesn't have the surplus of songs so great they sound like unearthed classics, which is the very thing that has always made Tenacious D so irresistible. Make no mistake, they're still great enough to rally. Excellent moments, but it doesn't add up to a record that's as satisfying an album as the debut. This is a bit disappointing, but THE PICK OF DESTINY is good as a soundtrack: a souvenir for fans of the film. That's enough for some portions of the legions of D-heads, but for some who have long loved the D, it's hard not to hear THE PICK OF DESTINY and wish that it rocked both of your socks off instead of just one.
