THE PICK OF DESTINY is the second studio album by American comedy rock band Tenacious D, the soundtrack for their feature film of the same name. The album was released on November 14, 2006, through Epic Records. THE PICK OF DESTINY is the band's first studio release in five years, following up their self-titled debut album in 2001. The album was produced by the Dust Brothers' John King, and includes appearances by Meat Loaf, Ronnie James Dio, and Dave Grohl. The cover shows Black and Gass in the clouds, parodying Michelangelo's painting The Creation Of Adam. In between the two's hands is the Pick Of Destiny, the movie's titular artifact, with the devil's arm pictured below them, sticking out from the clouds trying to take the pick. Apart from the exemption of the parental advisory sticker, there is no difference in the artwork for the Clean Version of the album.
PERSONNEL: Jack Black – lead vocals, acoustic guitar; Kyle Gass – backing vocals, acoustic and electric guitar, recorder; John Konesky – electric guitar; Ronnie James Dio, Meat Loaf – guest vocals; John Spiker – bass guitar, backing vocals, clavinet; Liam Lynch – additional guitar; Dave Grohl – drums, demon vocals; John King – drum programming.
Leave aside the merits of the movie and compare the THE PICK OF DESTINY soundtrack to the debut, and it's easy to see that this album is a very different beast than Tenacious D. That first album captured the essence of the original D - the D that was nothing but Kage and Jables and their guitars -- but pumped up with heaps of electric guitars and thunderous drums from Grohl. It cribbed from a lot, but not all, of their standards, so it felt like a culmination of sorts: it finally felt like the D blossomed into a genuine rock band. In turn, THE PICK OF DESTINY has greater ambitions but it doesn't feel like a breakthrough, since Tenacious D already took the D just about as far as they could go musically: it gave them muscle and might, it fleshed out their skeleton, sometimes a little bit too much, yet it worked because it sounded like this must be what JB and KG heard in their heads when they played on their own. There's no difference in sound on THE PICK OF DESTINY, but the aesthetic of a soundtrack makes a huge difference. Clean Version perfect for playing these iconic songs in the car with little ones around. But you get the impression they did not want to do this, as the choice of replacement phrases for the bad words are very silly, with any innuendo such as "take it up brown town" and "you're gonna gargle mayonnaise" are left intact, which to me suggests that the censor either does not understand English or it was a computer. Anyway, they could have made it better by replacing Dave Grohls infamous "F..... F..... FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU........" line with "Damn..... DAMN!...... Damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn" instead of the bizzare and ridiculous "Damn. DRAT!..... version". Tenacious D - there is a market for clean versions of your records that CLEVERLY replace the bad words rather than silly words. Luckily, the clean version of Rize Of The Fenix is much better in terms of the replaced lyrics.
