TENACIOUS D is the debut studio album by American comedy rock band Tenacious D, released on September 25, 2001 by Epic Records. The album's polished production was a departure from the band's acoustic origins, due in part to the production of the Dust Brothers. While TENACIOUS D did not achieve chart success after its release, it was certified platinum by the end of 2005. Despite only peaking at number 38 in the UK, it had sold 426,000 copies countrywide by 2006. Biting, sometimes base satire and humor populates this 21-cut comedy-rock debut from actor-musician Jack Black and his band, Tenacious D. Sort of like a trashier, more casual and less musical Beck, vocalist-guitarist Jack Black and guitarist-vocalist Kyle Gass, with help from Dave Grohl, Steve McDonald, and Page McConnell, deliver oddball musings that will appeal mostly to fans of the talented Black, whose earned a following thanks to memorable, frenetic turns in the films Hi Fidelity and Jesus' Son. The songs and "bits" include the wonderfully, intentionally melodramatic "Wonderboy," Black ordering "four Chicken McNuggets" on "Drive Thru," and the funny ode to vocalist Ronnie James Dio, where Black observes, "Dio has rocked for a very long time / Now it's time for him to pass the torch." With often intentionally droll and dumb humor smartly executed like a latter-day version, this more-comedy-than-rock debut achieved cult status.

Acoustic folk-metal? It sounds like a joke, and it kind of is, but TENACIOUS D's self-titled album is a member of that rare class of comedy rock album which combine good jokes with genuinely innovative music. Returning the acoustic guitar to a prominence it hadn't enjoyed in the more metal-leaning end of hard rock since the glory days of Led Zeppelin, Jack Black and Kyle Gass' masterwork includes some incredible smut (''Kielbasa'', ''Double Team'', ''Fuck Her Gently''), rock parody and tributes (''Tribute'' - duh - as well as the affectionate Dio), and some good old fashioned bombast (''Explosivo'', ''City Hall'') and intersperse it with short but sweet sketches which prove that skits on an album can work provided you get professional comedians to perform them. TENACIOUS D is, for the most part, a joke record and is very funny with lyrics and sketches, but with Dave Grohl providing the drumming and Black's voice having all of the attributes of classic rock singers, it rocks really hard and is immense fun. Jack Black and (more importantly) Kyle Gass, you are gods amongst men! YOU SHOULD BE WORSHIPPED!!! "God Bless You" but can Gods bless themselves??
