Grand Funk Railroad- LIVE … NEW YORK 1972- CD- 2017- Air Cuts Production- 5292317805811- 400 grn
Held on Christmas Eve 1972 in New York in order to raise funds for the Phoenix House, a drug rehabilitation center, the concert reproduced on this CD was broadcast by the American television network ABC on January 19, 1973: they recently became a quartet - with the entry of keyboardist Craig Frost alongside the power trio composed of Mark Farner, Mel Schacher and Don Brewer, the Grand Funk Railroad were already then one of the most popular rock bands in America, troubled by legal scuffles and contractual behind the scenes but united and very powerful on stage. They fully demonstrate it in this set that rattles off many of their classics (''Footstompin' Music'', ''Into The Sun'', ''Heartbreaker'', ''I'm Your Captain'', the cover of ''Inside Looking Out'' by the Animals) alongside the lead track of the new album Phoenix (''Flight Of The Phoenix'') and the reinterpretations of two classics by the bluesman Freddie King, ''Ain't No Sunshine When You're Gone'' and ''Going Down'', preceded by an introduction instrumental. Hard rock and seventies blues rock at the highest level. in spite of or perhaps thanks to the simplicity of the melodic lines and the energetic brutality fielded by the group from Flint, Michigan. Its good sound but its the TV show so it has the Phoenix House interview in the middle of ''I'm Your Captain'', It also has cut versions of songs like ''Hooked On Love''. Still it is worth having for any Grand Funk Railroad fan. GREAT!!! By late 1972 Grand Funk were firmly established as one of America's most popular rock acts, and had recently expanded from their power-trio format by adding Craig Frost on keyboards. This Christmas show was a benefit for Phoenix House, a drug rehab center, and was broadcast on ABC TV's In Concert show on 19th January 1973. Performing before a raucous standing room only audience at New York's legendary Madison Square Garden just two days prior to Christmas in 1972, Grand Funk Railroad's on-stage set was captured for ABC's In Concert television broadcast. The high octane jamming set features thundering drum work from Don Brewer, keyboard fills from new Funkster Craig Frost, Mel Schacher's thumping bass, and Farner's hard driving guitar and passionate vocals. It's certainly nice to hear a few different songs appearing and as a document it's nice to have. It will never come close to the three very best Grand Funk Railroad live albums that a readily available - that of the aforementioned, and very excellent, Live Album", nor that of the Live: The '71 Tour or Caught In The Act. These three would be most people's go-to Live albums. If, however, you want another exciting Grand Funk Railroad concert, and you want all that's available, then it's worth trying. The hot concert during the cold December New York night. ALL ABOARD!
