Johnny's live performance in San Diego 1974, captures the legend at the start of a transitional phase in his career. With his roots in blues rock, Johnny spent much of the early seventies performing rock and roll tracks. By '74, Winter is still primarily a rocker, but his recordings start to take on a bluesier feel, going back to the music that started his career. The nine tracks performed are representatives of his last few years of hard rock and roll. This concert in support of his Saints And Sinners album also includes the customary crowd pleasers such as "Johnny B. Goode" and "Jumping Jack Flash" (a practice he will abandon later the decade). In the seventies Johnny Winter live was invincible. The guitar fireworks he put on display was nothing short of jaw-dropping. His twelve minute plus rendition of "Silver Train" nearly quadruples the studio version found on Still Alive And Well in length and with ten of those minutes spent soloing, this cut alone illustrates finely the instrumental prowess of this master musician. He will launch into a drawn out solo and pack it to the brim with blistering licks and fast slide, the music played is nothing short of incredible. As this show was broadcast across the airwaves by KBFH FM San Diego the sound is near perfect and this mixed with the blistering performance on offer makes for one of the finest live Johnny Winter recordings available.
