It's hard to overstate the extent to which popular music changed and grew starting with The Beatles. Maybe we could say that pre-Beatles music is to Beatles music as tobacco is to pot. You could smoke 20 cigarettes, but it wouldn't turn you on the way a single toke of The Beatles' favorite herbal supplement does. That's as far as the tobacco analogy goes. It's not as if the early stuff is addictive or fatal or anything. But the ganja analogy holds up well, and it's more than just an analogy. The plant itself was a creative catalyst par excellence. Dylan turned The Beatles on, minds were expanded, and creativity and good vibes flowed. Countless musicians and listeners found their tastes changing and growing thanks to a humble, ancient plant.
