- Parlophone Records/MPL Communications Ltd./EMI Records Ltd.- 094633832527- 500 grn
CHAOS AND CREATION IN THE BACKYARD is the thirteenth solo studio album by Paul McCartney, released on 12th and 13th September, 2005. McCartney plays almost all of the instruments, similar to his 1970 album McCartney, the 1980 McCartney II album and the 2020 McCartney III album. In addition, CHAOS AND CREATION IN THE BACKYARD marks the first time since 1984's Give My Regards To Broad Street that Paul McCartney was not credited as producer. CHAOS AND CREATION IN THE BACKYARD was McCartney's last rock album release for longtime label EMI. He signed a deal with Hear Music, owned by Starbucks, in March 2007. The song "Friends To Go" is influenced by, and dedicated to, George Harrison. The cover for CHAOS AND CREATION IN THE BACKYARD is from a photograph of McCartney strumming a guitar in his family's back yard in Liverpool, taken by his brother Mike McCartney, aka Mike McGear, and originally titled Paul Under Washing, before being retitled Our Kid Through Mum's Net Curtains.

For CHAOS AND CREATION IN THE BACKYARD apart from a guitar part or two, a couple of drum tracks, and, of course, the strings and horns that pop up now and again, McCartney played everything here, from the guitars and keyboards down to the bass and drums. The difference here is that instead of producing the record by himself, McCartney brought in alt-rock auteur Nigel Godrich. Godrich has a gift for making messy or difficult music sound simple, logical, and clean. Consequently, CHAOS AND CREATION IN THE BACKYARD sounds as polished as a normal Paul McCartney album. The opener, "Fine Line", is a propulsive, hooky song that burrows into your head after just one spin and sounds like a tune you've known all your life, and "Promise To You Girl" also zips along nicely - but the overall feel of the record is one that's reflective and ruminative. Combination of introspective ballads and intricately detailed but not overly fussy or polished production means that CHAOS AND CREATION IN THE BACKYARD is a rare thing indeed. Which doesn't mean that it's somber or lacking in romantic material. If there are no outright knockouts here, there are no weak spots, either. The quiet nature of CHAOS AND CREATION IN THE BACKYARD may mean that some listeners will pass it over quickly, since it's a grower, but spend some time with the record and it becomes clear that McCartney is far from spent as either a songwriter or record-maker and, in many ways, continues to make some of the best music of his solo career.
