Paul McCartney- RUN DEVIL RUN- CD- 1999- MPL Communications Ltd./EMI Records Ltd.- 724352235124- 400 grn
RUN DEVIL RUN is the eleventh solo studio album by Paul McCartney, released on 4th October 1999. It features mostly covers of both familiar and obscure 1950s rock and roll songs, along with three original McCartney compositions written in the same style, including the title track, making it the second McCartney covers album, after his Russian cover album. As his first project following first wife Linda's death in 1998, McCartney felt the need to get back to his roots and perform some of the music he loved as a teenager. Year after his wife Linda's death, he gathered a bunch of friends with the intention of cutting a collection of rock & roll oldies with minimal rehearsal and a handful of takes. On the surface, that makes RUN DEVIL RUN like CНОВА В CCCP, but there are subtle differences that make RUN DEVIL RUN a far superior effort. This time around, there's a real freshness to the performances. Gilmour, in particular, amazes, turning in some of his finest playing in years. Similarly, McCartney is invigorated, leaving behind his vocal schtick, laying back and rocking out with a set of fairly unfamiliar oldies. Only three songs, "All Shook Up", "Lonesome Town" and "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" are radio staples. And while some songs are known by aficionados, they're not ubiquitous standards. This leaves room for a few more obscure songs plus three terrific new songs from McCartney. Best of all, McCartney create an appealingly out-of-time production. Heavily compressed sound, yes, but cleaner than '50s recordings and livelier, grittier than most '90s albums. It all adds up to a dynamic, loose, carefree, and utterly infectious record, one of his best solo albums.
PERSONNEL: Paul McCartney – vocals, bass guitar, electric guitar, percussion, acoustic guitar; David Gilmour – electric guitar, backing vocals, lap steel guitar; Mick Green – electric guitar; Dave Mattacks, Ian Paice – drums, percussion; Pete Wingfield – keyboards, piano, Hammond organ; Geraint Watkins – piano; Chris Hall – accordion.
This is far better than his first cover project, in large part because of the context. That one seemed to be made in a fit of embarrassment after he released a couple of poorly received albums. This one finds Paul retreating into a cocoon of safety during a period of grief. His beloved wife Linda passed away and this was the first project he undertook after she was gone. This is the music he has loved since his boyhood. It's also just better than CHOBA B CCCP. The performances, the production, the singing. It's all leagues better. It simmers and simmers and never actually explodes, but still feels like it accelerates towards something. This is a strong release full of passion and emotion. RUN DEVIL RUN is the sound of a man coming to grips with the loss of his soulmate. However, we get is a guy coping with his pain by retreating into the things which give him pleasure and strength, particularly first-generation rock 'n' roll. There's a handful of scattered originals thrown in for good measure, and they're always undercut by the rockabilly arrangement in which he performs them. In the end, if making this album gave Paul a sense of purpose while he coped with losing Linda, then that makes its existence worth it for him at least. But for an audience, this can't help but feel like a missed opportunity when a more personal singer/songwriter effort was just sitting there hoping to be made. But then again, Paul's not that kind of songwriter, and expecting him to be 100% personal and honest on record like his late songwriting partner did is a losing battle that's not worth fighting.
