IN FLIGHT (aka Japanese Tears was released on 6th December 1980) is the third album by guitarist Denny Laine, released shortly before the demise of Paul McCartney's band Wings, of which Laine was a member. The album was reissued in 1984 and 2008. In January 1980, Wings planned a tour of Japan. However, upon the band's arrival at the airport in Japan, Paul McCartney was arrested for marijuana possession. The tour was cancelled, and McCartney then decided to release a solo album McCartney II instead of touring, putting Wings on hiatus. Laine decided to work on his own solo project. The album also included three previously unreleased compositions that had been recorded by different versions of Wings between 1972 and 1978 with Laine singing lead. In addition, it featured remakes of The Moody Blues' 1965 hit "Go Now",, which was originally sung by Laine and which Laine with Wings performed on tour, and a 1967 Laine composition, "Say You Don't Mind". Two other songs featured the short-lived Denny Laine Band, which included fellow Wings member Steve Holley on drums and Laine's wife Jo Jo on backing vocals. This album has been re-issued several times, under a variety of titles, on an assortment of labels.
PERSONNEL: Denny Laine - guitars, keyboards, piano, lead vocals; Jo Jo Laine - backing vocals, lead vocals; Gordon Sellar - bass guitar; Andy Richards - keyboards, piano, organ; Mike Piggott - violin; Steve Holley - drums, percussion; Paul McCartney - bass, backing vocals; Linda McCartney - keyboards, backing vocals; Laurence Juber, Jimmy McCulloch, Henry McCullough - guitar; Steve Holley, Geoff Britton, Denny Seiwell - drums.
Having left Wings, Denny Laine finally got around to releasing a proper solo effort, and IN FLIGHT does have a certain charm. While with Wings, Laine never got much of a chance to showcase his songs, what with Macca being head honcho and all, and he accumulated many of these cuts while working with that band. Going back as far as 1973, and using the original Wings lineup on a couple of tracks, Laine adds songs here and there along the way in a patchwork quilt sort of way to fill up IN FLIGHT. While everything is interesting here, highlights include a re-recording of "Go Now" and the title cut which tells the story of a Japanese fan's reaction to the Wings tour which was canceled when Macca got the boot for possessing an illegal substance. IN FLIGHT is a look at one of rock's minor league players done well. Repackaged and recycled countless times, with countless track arrangements, titles, and album covers. This was the first proper, artist-sanctioned solo album of Denny Laine's actual, post-Wings career. IN FLIGHT in many ways, comes across as a very calculated effort at maximizing appeal to a Wings/Moody Blues audience. In that sense, it can be seen as his resume to the world. So, as far as Denny Laine albums go, it's a shame that this one, and the material from it, is so frequently recycled, but ultimately, it's a good companion piece to Wings' albums. It's just a shame that the real highlights are old songs recorded anew.
