SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND is the ninth studio album by English musician George Harrison, released on 1st June 1981 by Dark Horse Records. SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND was the first Harrison album to be released after the murder of his former Beatle bandmate John Lennon. The lyrics of its first single, "All Those Years Ago", pay tribute to Lennon. Harrison began recording SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND, his ninth overall solo record, in March 1980. However, the initial draft was rejected and Harrison reworked much of the material over the subsequent six months at his Friar Park studio in Henley-On-Thames. During this time three new songs were developed and added to the album while four tracks were cut from the final release. In 2004, SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND was remastered and reissued, both separately and as part of the box set The Dark Horse Years 1976–1992, on Dark Horse Records with new distribution by EMI. The reissue included the original mix of "Unconsciousness Rules" and, as a bonus track, Harrison's demo of "Save The World", recorded in early 1980. In addition, the rejected artwork was reinstated, replacing that used for the 1981 release. The 2004 CD issue re-instated the original cover. The original cover planned by George was his picture superimposed onto a map of England. While SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND did reach the Top 20 in both the UK and US, it’s chart run was relatively brief. After the follow-up 1982 album, Gone Troppo fared even worse, Harrison retreated from the music industry for half a decade.

SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND had a troubled birth, for when Harrison originally submitted it for release in November 1980, Warner Bros. rejected it, claiming that were not worthy of being issued. Harrison was forced to go back into the studio to cut four new tunes. As a result, the most compelling issue of this album is the contest of wills between the artist and the suits. Now how do the four deleted tunes stack up against the ones that replaced them? The four missing tunes are of generally even quality, even similar in sound. Actually, the six tunes that Warner Bros. spared should have been more likely candidates for the hook, including the curious covers of two Hoagy Carmichael songs. Yet in general, the new ones are indeed superior and more varied, with more of a punch than the ones they replaced. The obvious indelible track from this album is “All Those Years Ago”, musically built on the fantastic electric piano and synths of Al Kooper along with some fine synths and slide guitars by Harrison. The song was originally written for Ringo Starr to sing on his upcoming solo record. After Lennon’s death the following month, Harrison took the track back and rewrote it as a tribute to him. Starr’s drumming on the track was maintained and Paul McCartney and his Wings’ bandmates were brought in to provide backing vocals, making this the first recording on which Harrison, McCartney and Starr all appeared. It's not really all that bad but it's a little bit overly glossy and safe. Definitely Hari on autopilot a bit but luckily there are a few standouts amidst the filler.
