LIVE ON is the third studio album by American blues solo artist Kenny Wayne Shepherd, released on 12th October 1999. It was certified Gold in 2000. LIVE ON marks the second album to feature vocals from Noah Hunt. Being a teenage blues guitar prodigy is a double-edged sword. Stunning technique brings attention, but also criticism that it's all style and no soul. This criticism plagued Kenny Wayne Shepherd since his popular debut album, Ledbetter Heights. It didn't help that Shepherd so strongly recalled Stevie Ray Vaughan. It also didn't help that some of his material was a little too slick, appealing as much to album rock as to blues-rock audiences. By the time of his third album, 1999's LIVE ON, he had begun to reconcile these two sides of his personality, but the best thing about the record is that it's tougher and stronger than its two predecessors. Kenny Wayne Shepherd not only seems to be developing a style of his own, the playing of his band has become grittier, or at least it's being captured better on record. Shepherd can still fall prey to excess, but not as often as he used to. He's figuring out how to restrain himself, and his music is all the better for it.

LIVE ON is another milestone of rockin' blues for this phenomenal musician still in his early twenties. There's no appreciable stylistic difference between LIVE ON and its predecessors, Trouble Is... and Ledbetter Heights, except that Shepherd's guitar work here sounds more assured. All of the other usual ingredients are present - a full, crunchy guitar sound, a tight rhythm section, mature-sounding vocals from Noah Hunt, and the usual assortment of uptempo rockers and slower, sweeter numbers. If Shepherd seems to be edging closer to the rock side of the blues-rock genre, it's hardly surprising given that's where he's had his greatest success. And if the result doesn't seem to quite transcend genre boundaries, it is, at least, a high-octane, energetic effort. Kenny Wayne Shepherd is not afraid to dip his twenty-something hand into the waters of pop rock. LIVE ON, the third release from the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band, illustrates this magnificently. Shepherd's backing band is one main reason why LIVE ON is such a special disc. Noah Hunt's vocals are as much a distinct part of the sound as Shepherd's guitar work. Separate the two, and the magic is greatly diminished. The rhythm section of bassist Keith Christopher and drummer Sam Bryant might not always be the center of attention, but their solid rhythmic backbone helps to lay down a solid foundation for Shepherd to come in and add the guitar highlights. The first half of LIVE ON is the strongest, with the songs hitting like rabbit punches to the midsection. But the second half of the disc almost sags under its own weight. A notable exception to this is the title track, which is given every opportunity to shine. Shepherd's guitar work here is nothing short of magnificent. There is no doubt that Shepherd is both a talented musician and songwriter. But Shepherd should try and be more free-thinking with some of his music. After all, it's one thing to emulate arguably the greatest blues guitarist of this generation. It's another to take his legacy and build upon it by branching out.
