GOOD EVENING NEW YORK CITY is a live album by Paul McCartney consisting of material performed over three nights as the inaugural concerts at New York City's Citi Field, 17, 18 and 21 July 2009, part of his Summer Live '09 concert tour. Over 180,000 tickets were sold within hours of the shows being announced. Previous McCartney live albums proved to be huge sellers based on his record-breaking live shows from the 2000s. The package was available in two formats: a 3-disc (2CD + 1DVD) standard edition and a 4-disc (2CD + 2DVD) Deluxe Edition version featuring expanded packaging and a bonus DVD including McCartney's 15 July performance on the Ed Sullivan Theater Marquee for his appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman. Unlike its 2002 predecessor, Back In The U.S./Back In The World, GOOD EVENING NEW YORK CITY doesn’t cherrypick highlights from a tour, it commemorates a specific event: the inauguration of Citi Field in the summer of 2009 - the replacement for the now-defunct Shea Stadium, where The Beatles played a legendary show in 1965.
PERSONNEL: Paul McCartney – lead vocals, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, piano, electric guitar, ukulele, mandolin; Rusty Anderson – electric and acoustic guitars, backing vocals, co-lead vocals; Brian Ray – bass guitar, rhythm and acoustic guitars, backing vocals; Paul Wickens – keyboards, electric guitar, accordion, harmonica, percussion, backing vocals; Abe Laboriel Jr. – drums, percussion, backing vocals; Billy Joel - co-lead vocals and piano.
This is the same band which performed on McCartney's previous live album Back In The U.S.. This 4-disc (2CD & 2DVD) Limited Deluxe Edition of GOOD EVENING NEW YORK CITY features dazzling performances of Beatles, Wings and solo classics from Citi Field, formerly Shea Stadium, historic site of The Beatles’ Landmark 1965 Concert. As documented on GOOD EVENING NEW YORK CITY, "I'm Down" from The Beatles 1965 set list was revived for the Citi Field shows. Other highlights include faithful takes on Beatles classics "Drive My Car", "Blackbird", "Eleanor Rigby", "Back In The USSR", "Let It Be", "Hey Jude", "Helter Skelter" and more, plus "Something" rendered on a ukulele given to Paul by George Harrison, and a tribute to John Lennon in the form of a medley of "A Day In The Life" and "Give Peace A Chance". Also Wings-era tracks and the McCartney solo material, a pair of numbers from Electric Arguments, the 2008 album released under the alias of The Firemen. The concert footage featured on GOOD EVENING NEW YORK CITY edition features concert footage directed by Paul Becher, who has overseen live visuals for McCartney for some 200 performances and counting. The 33-song 2 hour 40 minute performances were shot in High Definition using 15 cameras and digital footage incorporated from 75 Flipcams handed out to fans over the course of the three night stand. The audio mix, in both stereo and 5.1, was handled by longtime McCartney engineer Paul Hicks, whose credits include the recent Beatles remasters, The Beatles Anthology, Let It Be... Naked, and two Grammy awards for his mixing work on The Beatles' Love album. Macca delivering an expertly balanced and sequenced set with all the skill of the old pro that he is. Apart from the inclusion of “Mrs. Vanderbilt” and “I’m Down,” there are no surprises, either in song selection or performance, but no surprises doesn’t mean no satisfaction, and this is plenty entertaining.
