That same adolescence, from 15 to 17 years old, helped Paul cut his teeth in a London band inspired by Chicago blues called Black Cat Bones. Unfortunately, when they recorded their first and only album, the sensational Barbed Wire Sandwich, he had already been replaced by another future great, Rod Price, later in Foghat. Koss had formed an unknown Free with another ex-Black Cat Bones, Simon Kirke. The collectible Sunbeam label released this marvel on a luxury double CD in 2008. Its content is pure gold. Rehearsal recordings in a gloomy Tottenham Court Road basement made by the father of the then drummer Frank Perry, on a mono four-track. You can sense that the sound is not tremendous, although for the precariousness of the means, it is not bad either, and it is a priceless testimonial document. Listening to a band of young people hungry for music, carrying themselves with a self-confidence that is close to professional, absorbing the essences of Freddie King, B.B. King or Lightning Hopkins and Elmore James. This was in the midst of the British blues explosion of the late 60s. Where they supported, among others, Jethro Tull at that time immersed in blues, John Mayall at the Bluesbreakers, Ten Years After or Fleetwood Mac. Black Cat Bones would also act as a "backing band" for bluesmen who jumped across the pond from the USA, such as Eddie Boyd and Champion Jack Dupree. Of the latter, three different versions of his "Bad Blood" are included. The lineup included in this Holy Grail of blues rock was Paul Kossoff, Frank Perry, the Brooks brothers - Derek and Stuart, and Paul Tiller. To further increase the historical value of these sessions, we have in "I'm Ready" by Willie Dixon Paul Rodgers himself singing, who dropped by the group's rehearsals, surely already enamored of Paul Kossoff's technique. The selection of material is overwhelming - "Rock Me Baby", "The Sky Is Crying'", "Shake Your Moneymaker". The aforementioned songs and a reflective "Paul's Blues" that reflects the greatness of this great little genius, before being consumed by alcohol and drugs. All of his licks explode in these sessions, deep feeling in his vibrato in sustain, with his pickup completely in treble. Exploding his inseparable Gibson Les Paul in instrumental cavalcades in a Cream vein with harmonica outbursts in the style of Junior Wells. But above all, the spirit of Free prophesying the genius that would follow.

Kossoff’s first proper band, Black Cat Bones, were a late 60s blues-rock group which also featured future Free drummer Simon Kirke. The Bones were well-known on the live circuit and acted as a house band for many visiting US outfits, while also supporting Fleetwood Mac and Peter Green. This set features Kossoff’s earliest known works, including rehearsals with the Bones in London in 1967. Both the content and sound quality means that only fans need apply, yet those same fans will listen with glee as Kossoff’s fiery jams see him at the top of his game. The recordings are of considerable historical importance. They are released here for the very first time, along with a booklet featuring rare photographs, full liner notes and an introduction from the bands drummer, Frank E. Perry III, making the album an essential purchase for all serious Rock fans. From Black Cat Bones the influential Leaf Hound would come out thanks to the Brooks brothers. And it all started in these historic recordings. A banquet of blues rock to savor calmly and a good bourbon. Exceptional document.
