LIVE AT CROYDON FAIRFIELD HALLS 15/6/75 is a live album by English rock guitarist Paul Kossoff. It was recorded live at Croydon Fairfield Halls, Surrey, England on 15th June 1975 and released in 1983. Paul Francis Kossoff (14 September 1950 – 19 March 1976) was an English pop music guitarist, who was a member of the band Free and Back Street Crawlers. He was ranked 51st in Rolling Stone magazine list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time". The 1975 Croydon show encapsulates the band perfectly. A very worthwhile tribute to a very short lived band. The story of Back Street Crawler is a sadly short one, but also a tale of what might have been. Free guitarist Paul Kossoff’s first move was to record his solo album Back Street Crawler for Island Records in 1973. Joining forces with Terry Wilson (bass), Mike Montgomery (keyboards) and Tony Braunagel (drums), who had played together in Bloontzfrom, plus singer Terry Wilson-Slesser, Kossoff’s Back Street Crawler solo record gave the new band their name, who were then signed by Ahmet Ertegun to Atlantic Records. Released in 1975, The Band Plays On featured ''Jason Blue'', ''Train Song'' and ''Rock & Roll Junkie''. Prior to the release, the band performed a handful of UK shows, including a gig at Croydon’s Fairfield Hall on 15th June 1975, captured here on CD, and featuring ''The Band Played On'', ''It’s A Long Way Down To The Top'', ''New York New York'', ''Train Song'' and ''Survivor'' from the band’s debut, as well as the blues rock classic Paul Kossoff’s ''Molten Gold''. Never let it be said that Koss went downhill post-Free. The band Back Street Crawler on this album are more rocky, occasionally funky or soulful, but still equally capable of performing the emotive slower blues-rock of Free. This is a band - not just Koss with backing musicians, and they could have gone far if he hadn't been snatched from us far too soon. This is eleven live tracks version recorded at Croydon's Fairfield Hall in June 1975. The concert that turned out to be the last for Paul Kossoff as hedied the next spring of a drug overdose on a flight to NewYork. The full title is LIVE AT CROYDON FAIRFIELD HALLS 15/6/75. This version 1998 by Eagle Rock Entertainment release. We would walk over hot coals to have seen the genius that is Paul Kossoff, so this live album is a god send from the ''The Band Plays On'' to ''Rock 'n' Roll Junkie'', but track is ''It's A Long Way Down To The Top'' a very true reflection of the man playing majestically in the corner. Every track is gold and the voice of Terry Wilson Slesser was as good as Koss's last lead vocalist. This live show was done a full three months before the debut album was put on sale. Enjoy and love Paul Kossoff where less was really more. He is one of britains finest guitarist's even if he is mainly over looked it is such a crying shame. Koss, although a lad from a well to do family in the South of England, had that edge of menace, there's a tension and thinly veiled anger to his style, it's spare and muscular, he never overplays, many times it seems as though he's ready to snap the neck off his Les Paul, which is the huge difference between him and those younger cats who drop his name now. You need this in your collection. End of story. He left us too soon, but he left truly moving guitar behind him. Score this, it's a great way to celebrate an era that provided music to stand the test of time. Please don't pass this album up.
