Paul Kossoff- KOSSOFF: BLUE SOUL - THE BEST OF PAUL KOSSOFF – CD- 1986/2010-
- Island Records Ltd./IronBird Records- 5013929881174- 400 grn
His death in 1976 coming just three years after Free disbanded, it’s perhaps understandable that the majority of this collection of highlights from the career of one of the UK’s greatest rock guitarists should focus on the group with which he made his name. There’s no space for the ubiquitous ''All Right Now'' or ''Wishing Well'', however, though the ten Free tracks included are easily available on any number of reissues. The more interesting material is, therefore, Paul Kossoff’s session work, such as the testifying ''We Got Time'' by Carol Grimes’ blues-rockers Uncle Dog, or the grizzly soul of ''I Know Why The Sun Don’t Shine'' by The Rumbledown Band, featuring Frankie Miller on lead vocals. The greatest diversion from the core sound of Free comes in the shape of two distinctly poppy tracks he recorded with Jim Capaldi. Paul Kossoff’s only solo album, 1973’s Back Street Crawler, is represented by the slick ''I’m Ready'', with Jess Roden on vocals, and ''Molten Gold'', which sees all three of his Free colleagues lending a hand. What shines across all seventeen tracks is Kossoff’s intuitive feel for his instrument, complementing some great voices without ever sledgehammering its way to the front of the mix. KOSSOFF: BLUE SOUL - THE BEST OF PAUL KOSSOFF isn't a ''Best Of'' Paul Kossoff. Although, strangely, the re-titled remastered edition does make that claim. However you'll bought it just to have The Rumbledown Band's "I Know Why The Sun Don't Shine" on disc - Koss on guitar, Frankie Miller on vocals and Andy Fraser on everything else! It's an incredible take on Frankie's song from his album The Rock with Henry McCullough on guitar then. "Over The Green Hills: Part 1" also the first number on Free's debut album Tons Of Sobs, leads quickly into the wild lead guitar of "Worry" - where it all ''really'' started for Paul. The three live tracks are not those on the original Free Live! album. Two are on the expanded 2002 remaster and they highlight what Koss could do live, when he was well enough. "Oh I Wept" from Free's classic album Fire And Water, might not be an obvious choice but "Catch A Train", the opening track on the reformed Free's album Free At Last, has Koss playing with real enthusiasm and freedom and "Come Together In The Morning" from the band's last album Heartbreaker, is one of Koss' finest moments in the studio, without a doubt. Add to that a track from Paul's first post-Free band Kossoff Kirke Tetsu Rabbit, two from his first solo album and one from his final album, alongside four session tracks (three from Jim Capaldi's debut) and this is a great overview of Paul Kossoff's short career. The CD sounds good and this edition is a real labour of love, having a great 12 page booklet with an informative three page biography, recording details and black&white photographs of the young Koss.
