NOW & LIVE is a double CD compilation-like album released in June 1997 by Paul Rodgers of Free and Bad Company fame. In fact, it is a re-release of the studio album NOW including a disc of live material recorded in 1995 and issued on the album LIVE: THE LORELEY TAPES....... The album's full 24-track version, but as one CD 2003 also is known. In a career dating back to 1968, NOW was only Paul Rodgers' second solo album of original material, following 1983's Cut Loose. Of course, in that time he fronted Free, Bad Company, the Firm and The Law, and in the early 1990s crafted tributes to Muddy Waters and Jimi Hendrix, so he wasn't exactly idle. NOW was an album for Free and Bad Company fans, recreating those groups' guitar-bass-drums backing and bluesy hard rock sound. It has always been amazing that a singer as distinctive as Paul Rodgers, whose gruff voice can be identified within seconds, has remained anonymous behind his group monikers. And it is doubly surprising since Rodgers has always performed the same kind of simple, driving rock. NOW was more of the same: as a songwriter, Paul Rodgers' lyrics rarely moved far from expressions of love and longing, and as a composer he never moved beyond a few basic chords. What mattered, of course, was that voice, and it was as powerful on NOW as it had ever been. For good measure, the CD included a second bonus disc containing a 1995 live performance at which Paul Rodgers performed Free and Bad Company favorites, an appropriate accompaniment to the essentially similar new material.

Not one, but two CD's worth of material from one of rock's greatest singers. This is Paul Rodgers good album since he left Free. It is hard heavy blues rock at its best. The studio album NOW both contains original songs and it is so well recorded and produced. The guitarist Geoff Whitehorn is totally underestimated who had played amongst others with Back Street Crawler earlier in his career. Whilst he can not replace the genius of Paul Kossoff he is an established guitarist in his own right. As for Paul Rodgers we all know what a great vocalist he is and he produces on this album. There are two outstanding tracks on this album notably ''All I Really Want Is You'' and ''I Lost It All''. Fantastic. If a teacher was writing a report card for this album it would probably read something like "Paul does well but can do better". This is good his work - either in previous band incarnations or as solo works but there are a couple of redeeming standout tracks. It's a little pop-music and why sing pop when you have the best blues vocals in the world? The LIVE is quite good for years now. On disc two, Paul and his solo band perform hits from Free, Bad Company, and solo discs to an adoring audience in Germany. Highlights here include all the Free songs and all the numbers from Paul's tribute album, Muddy Water Blues. Particulary good is an excellent jam version of "Rolling Stone'', complete with whistle and other train sound effects by former Crawler and Paul McCartney guitarist Geoff Whitehorn. In sum, a fine set, especially considering you get double the music. So, check this collection out if you are hungry to hear some good live and studio music.
