COMPANY OF STRANGERS is the eleventh studio album by the English blues rock band Bad Company, and their first with lead singer Robert Hart, in place of Brian Howe who had replaced Paul Rodgers in 1986. The album was released in June 1995. To date, it is the band's latest studio album of all-new material. COMPANY OF STRANGERS was another generic installment from the reunited Bad Company. While the music is certainly accomplished, and the musicians are all tasteful professionals. Bad Company don't embarrass themselves on COMPANY OF STRANGERS, but they don't offer old fans any reason to get reacquainted with the band. With Brian Howe drifting out of Bad Company, guitarist Mick Ralphs and drummer Simon Kirke revamped the Bad Company line-up with Robert Hart taking over from behind the microphone, while filling out the ranks with bassist Rick Wills and guitarist Dave "Bucket" Colwell. Hart, who previously fronted Distance, proved to be a worthy replacement, as the British singer did his best to carry on where Paul Rodgers had left off. There will never be another Paul Rodgers, but throughout COMPANY OF STRANGERS, Robert Hart earned praise for his soulful pipes on the blues-rock recording. The self-produced COMPANY OF STRANGERS features thirteen original tracks, with each group member contributing to the writing process. Several songs from COMPANY OF STRANGERS album, which pays special thanks via the credits to Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington, carry a southern vibe. Without a doubt, COMPANY OF STRANGERS is the most compelling Bad Company studio album from the group's post Swan Song recording career. Bad Company kick hardest on COMPANY OF STRANGERS when they’re fast, funky, and Foreigner-like, as on the macho cars-and-women grunts ”Down Down Down” and ”Clearwater Highway.” The dirt-road guitar-crossings in the chugging outlaw sketches might hold your attention, but their ’70s hits could hold it a lot longer.
PERSONNEL: Robert Hart − vocals; Mick Ralphs − lead guitar, piano; Dave Colwell − rhythm guitar; Rick Wills − bass; Simon Kirke − drums; Mel Collins − saxophone; Michael Kamen - strings arranged and conducted.
The main difference between this and the Brian Howe fronted albums is that musically it sounds like Bad Company again and not the Foreigner tribute band that Brian Howe and Terry Thomas had turned them into. Just listen to the similarities between the Bad Company album Holy Water and the Foreigner one Unusual Heat and you'll see what mean. The opening title track penned by Hart and drummer Kirke is classic Bad Company. Had it been recorded by the Paul Rodgers fronted line up it would have been on the radio as frequently as ''Feel Like Making Love'' or the track ''Bad Company''. Some great guitar work from Mick Ralphs and second guitarist Dave Colwell helping to build the song into a classic. There is even a slower paced bridge a la ''Deal With The Preacher'' to highlight Robert Hart's outstanding vocal ability. Honestly, as a track it is as good as anything put out by the classic line up. Similarly ''Abandoned And Alone'' is very much in the same vein as ''Ready For Love'' from their superb debut album. The other eleven tracks are a nice mixture of fast paced rockers and more gentle balladic type tracks. That is the whole success of the album as it just has the good feel of a Bad Company album about it with constant pace and mood changes. Prejudices prevent you from enjoying what is a mighty fine rock album... and if it helps remember that it was on the record companies insistence that they kept the name Bad Company anyway.
