BURNIN’ SKY is the fourth studio album by the English rock band Bad Company. It was released on 3rd March 1977. BURNIN’ SKY was recorded in France at Château d'Hérouville in July and August 1976. Its release was delayed until March 1977 so to not compete with the band's then-current album Run With The Pack. The album was remastered in 1994. The cover is similar to the poster for the 1969 Sam Peckinpah film The Wild Bunch. The string finally ran out for Bad Company with their fourth album, BURNIN’ SKY. Their approach was so simple that it almost inevitably became formulaic, and although Mick Ralphs continued to screech with his sparse guitar leads and Paul Rodgers continued to present his lust in a soulful voice - well, one had heard it all before several times by now. A band that begins life declaring "I can't get enough of your love" doesn't really have anywhere to go, and by this, their fourth album, Bad Company were getting sloppy around the edges, tossing in a '50s pastiche in "Everything I Need," crooning the happy wanderer as if he were on a drunk pub crawl. Of course, the real reason this was the first of the band's LPs to miss the Top Ten in the U.S. and the U.K. is that last point: only one hit single in the title track. Clearly, it was time to try something new, but after three years of stadium rocking, what Bad Company wanted to try instead was a vacation. They weren't heard from again for two years.

When it came time for Bad Company to regroup and record a fourth studio album, the band was running on fumes. The years spent relentless touring in support of three hit records had taken a definite toll. The group still had enough gas in the tank to crank out BURNIN’ SKY, even if they had to make it up on the fly. Recording the album over the summer of 1976 in Hérouville, France, Bad Company sat on the finished product while previous album, Run With The Pack, continued to rock the U.S. charts. The group finally released BURNIN’ SKY in March 1977. Although BURNIN’ SKY is firmly slotted into the comfortable menace of Anglo blues-rock growl, some credit is due Bad Company for loosening up sufficiently to nudge the limits of hard-rock convention. BURNIN’ SKY does sport a crisp, streamlined sound and a noticeable softening of the band's synthetic macho posing. The title track lays down all of the comfortable parameters. Mick Ralphs continues to play full, hard chords and simple solo lines, but his rhythm and fills are becoming more sophisticated, while the nearly constant use of a phasing device gives his instrument much more effective bite. "Morning Sun," which follows, provides the usual hard-to-soft contrast with a traditional lament built on an acoustic 12-string figure. A master at the art of the faceless lyric, Paul Rodgers fashions safe little modules of contemporary thought. This functional view of lyrics short-circuits during the album's most perverse track, the jam/dirge "Master Of Ceremony," a two-chord organ-guitar vamp redolent with the inevitable. This sortie is dominated by really embarrassing lyrics on brotherhood and a distorted, meandering sense of phrasing. It is tracks like "Master Of Ceremony" and the charming reggae spoof "Everything I Need" that give BURNIN’ SKY its spark. The humor may seem a bit forced at times, but at least they're trying. For a change, this ready-made star package is giving us some humanity. To paraphrase - being white isn't always uncool either.
