STRAIGHT SHOOTER is the second studio album by the English hard rock supergroup Bad Company. The album was released on 21st December 1974. It was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association Of America a month after its release. The album was remastered in 1994. Bad Company has become the latest of the classic rock-era superstars to enter the classic rock-reissue sweepstakes. However, Bad Company and their reissue producers have managed to find much more interesting tracks to accompany the current album remasters. As for STRAIGHT SHOOTER, there are enough interesting alternate tracks to reimagine an entire, somewhat different album that feels less heavy and closer in tone to its predecessor. Alternate vocals and guitar solos, and a surprise harmonica solo during “Feel Like Makin’ Love” keep things interesting. There are even two never-before-issued songs, “See The Sunlight” and “All Night Long,” both of which sound good enough to have been considered for inclusion in the final running order. As well, there appears yet another of Bad Company’s reworkings of “Easy On My Soul,” this one closer to the original that Paul Rodgers carried over from Heartbreaker, the final album by his previous band Free. Sonically, the reissues sound great. All of the instruments are quite clear, and it becomes easy to see how each band member contributed to the overall sound. Frankly, they were probably a better band than they were ever given credit for in their time. As for lead vocalist Paul Rodgers: He really should be mentioned right up there with Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey, Rod Stewart and company. As heard in these remasters: Yes, he’s THAT good. Based on these reissues, Bad Company should get the chance to give the rest of classic 1970s recordings the Deluxe Edition treatment. If nothing else, the albums should raise the standard for any future reissues by the rest of the usual suspects.

In contrast to the simple, sometimes stark hard rock of Bad Company, this second album adds much variety with the addition of acoustic guitars, keyboards and occasional strings. Along with the album’s eight tracks, the group recorded a song called, “Whisky Bottle”, which eventually ended up as a B-side to a single. STRAIGHT SHOOTER reached the identical lofty spot of Number Three in the UK, US, and Canada and it was certified Gold within a month of its release. In association with Rhino Entertainment Company, the band has remastered the album from the original tapes making it sound crystal clear, as if one were standing in the recording booth watching it all go down! If that is not enough great news, the Deluxe Edition also comes with a second disc that contains 14 bonus tracks, all but one of which was previously unreleased! As good as the bonus goodies are the best thing about this remastered release is still the main album. These tracks now sound so damn good it is scary! Bad Company instantly proved to the world that lightening doesn't just strike once when they released their second album, STRAIGHT SHOOTER. In many ways STRAIGHT SHOOTER is the better of the two classic releases, given the deluxe treatment by Rhino. This is one of those albums that when ‘turning on’ the next generation to classic rock, us older guys go, "Oh, this one you've GOTTA hear!" Now with the bonus disc and the remastering of the tunes, it sounds better than ever before. This one is a must-own for anyone who calls themselves a fan of rock and roll.
