COLOUR COLLECTION Series.
Each of the 15 titles in the first series is packaged in a COLOUR COLLECTION Series branded die-cut digipak which exposes it's unique color. Song selection speaks for itself. For everyone who wants to get to know Free, 68 minutes of rock, blues and ballads at their best are offered. Paul Rodger's skills as an expressive little roughneck and Paul Kossof's skills as an expressive blues guitarist of the faction "less is more, but every note with maximum expression" are just as sublime as the songwriting talents of Rodgers and Andy Fraser, one of the most unusual bass players of blues rock. Or is it because of the straight playing of drummer Simon Kirke? They may not have been around long enough to become as well known as Led Zeppelin, but Free certainly knew how to cook up a bluesy slab of hard rock, as evidenced by any of the tracks collected for the Free edition of the COLOUR COLLECTION Series. While best known as the band that spawned Bad Company, Free were great in their own right, and featured one of rock's most underrated guitarists, the late/great Paul Kossoff. While Led Zeppelin tackled a variety of different styles over the course of their career, Free stuck closely to their original direction throughout, and in the process scored one of classic rock radio's most-spun tunes, "All Right Now." And while they were unable to match the chart success of the aforementioned song, that's not to say they didn't have a healthy number of other songs that were just as deserving - "Wishing Well", "Fire and Water", "The Hunter", "Heartbreaker" and "Mr. Big" - all of which are included here. If you're looking for a single-disc overview of one of the most underrated blues-rock outfits of the early '70s, then Free's COLOUR COLLECTION is a must-have.
PERSONNEL: Paul Rodgers - Vocals, Guitar; Paul Kossoff - Lead Guitar; Andy Fraser - Bass; Simon Kirke - Drums.
Free one of those blues-rock bands that definitely developed their own touch. The harder sounds used, combined with more solemnly vibrating sound structures, are remarkable, so that this group speaks for itself. Free, were a relatively unknown rock group until the release of their album Fire And Water in 1970 which produced their mega hit "All Right Now". And what a hit it was. It was all over radio stations back then and even today is played on classic rock stations as well as television commercials. Singer Paul Rodgers had a strong soulful voice which when combined with Paul Kossoff's extroadinary guitar playing, Andy Fraser's bass playing and Simon Kirk's drumming you had one powerful group of musicians destined to be one the the seventies finest rock groups. This remastered COLOUR COLLECTION from Universal Records is excellent and contains all their choice songs including "All Right Now" (in it's full length version), "Wishing Well", "Come Together In The Morning", "Fire And Water", "The Stealer", "The Hunter", "Little Bit Of Love", "The Highway Song", "Heartbreaker", "Heavy Load", "I'm A Mover", "Mr. Big", "Be My Friend", and "Walk In My Shadow". Sixteen tracks featuring hits and album tracks. Free were one of the seventies great underrated rock groups and this collection is about as complete a collection on one compact disc as you will ever find. The remastering is excellent and is much better than other Free greatest hits. If you like seventies rock such as Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Uriah Heep (to name just a few) you'll love this collection. The selection on this CD is recommended!
