CHRONICLES is a greatest hits album by Free was released on 24th January 2005. The compilation contains 35 tracks that perfectly illustrate the depth and breadth of Free's recorded work. A band that perfectly combined blues, soul and rock with some of the best music recorded during the 70's. When Free finally split in early 1973, after less than five years of triumph and tragedy, they left behind seven wonderful albums that perfectly catalogue their evolution from 'Blues Boom' teenagers to part of the 70's Rock elite. Time has done little to diminish the worth, or intensity, of Free's recorded work, and that's why over three decades later they continue to influence and inspire current srtists. The CHRONICLES double CD is actually a superior collection to the other better known double comp called Molten Gold: The Anthology - 1. It's got a few more tracks; 2. The sound is equally good; 3. The booklet is well researched and informative; 4.The price is better. :) Yes they chose the single version of "All Right Now" but you have no beef with that. Although the 45 rpm rendition is a minute shorter it is a far superior mix. The guitars are louder, and the bass and drums punch more. The headline says Limited Edition - that may mean that this release will be hard to find some day. And of course the price would then go UP.

Free was a great band and this is a fine sampler if their high quality tunes. More primal and bluesy than Bad Company. They should have given Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple better competition, but nevertheless essential for any understanding of the roots of Heavy Metal. CHRONICLES is an excellent compilation with the added bonus of the live tracks, you can't go wrong. This compolation is pretty good and the live tracks sound very good considering the period the recordings were done. But there is one problem here - they have chosen to include only the single version of "All Right Now" which runs over a minute shorter that the LP version. They could have easily included both had they done so. You'll in love with what's on these two discs. Intense and more important, soulful, they were an amazing band. Great collection. If your a fan of Free, you'll no doubt have all these tracks on albums but for anyone wishing to savour a taste of what true bluesy rock of a past decade sounds like, this collection is cracking. Better late than never. Total time 2 hour 32 minute. ROCK ON!
