In the spring of 1968, the guitarist Paul Kossoff and the drummer Simon Kirk, who had already played together in Black Cat Bones, met in London with the singer Paul Rodgers, whom they had poached from Brown Sugar. Bassist Andy Fraser, who had recently been fired from John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, completed the quartet, which received an extraordinary supporter in the "father of the white blues", Alexis Korner. The group name also comes from their mentor, who simply called the four teenagers “free” after a gig in the Nags Head Pub in Battersea. When six months later the group's first album Tons Of Sobs hit record stores Simon Kirk 19, Paul Kossoff and Paul Rodgers 18, Andy Fraser only 16 years old. 1969 was characterized by almost non-stop touring, with Free also appearing as the opening act for Blind Faith on their US tour. Fire And Water, released in June 1970, already marks the zenith of Free. "All Right Now" helped the group to an unforgettable performance at the Isle of Wight Festival in front of 600,000 concertgoers and catapulted the quartet into the Champions League of rock groups. Free's performance in the Mecca Ballroom, Sunderland, County Durham caused tumult and hysteria that had previously only been experienced by The Beatles. The fourth studio album Highway, released in December 1970, was unable to match the success of its predecessor, but brought musical progress that showed the intellectual side of the group members. A huge workload eventually led to friction, which culminated in Free's first breakup after a successful tour of Japan and Australia in May 1971. Fraser founded Toby, Rodgers - Peace, while Kossoff and Kirke teamed up with Japanese bassist Tetsu Yamauchi and Texan keyboardist John "Rabbit" Bundrick. But these unsuccessful projects were not to last long, as the group's fifth studio album, Free At Last, was released in June 1972. In July, on the eve of a tour of Japan, 19-year-old Andy Fraser left the band. Paul Kossoff gave him the reasons for this because concerts from the previous US tour had to be canceled due to his drug addiction and depression. Without further ado, Tetsu Yamauchi and John "Rabbit" Bundrick joined the band. Free recorded their seventh and final album "Heartbreaker" in January 1973 with this lineup. But they finally separated after a US tour, during which Paul Kossoff was replaced by Wendell Richardson from Osibisa. Bassist Tetsu Yamauchi replaced Ronnie Wood in the Faces. Bundrick earns his living as a session musician and keyboardist for The Who. Rodgers and Kirke formed Bad Company with Mick Ralphs and Boz Burrell. Paul Kossoff tried out with his group Back Street Crawler until he died on board a plane on 19th March 1976 due to a heart attack at the age of 25. In line with Cream and Led Zeppelin, Free are among the most influential bands of the British blues boom at the end of the 1960s. Thanks to Paul Kossoff's guitar playing and Paul Rodger's singing skills, they also became immortal icons of early hard rock. It's a don't perfect collection. But, this is one of the best sounding discs. Was room to clean up the original masters, and whoever did this took great care to make sure the mixes are clean. And Andy Fraser's bass is very warm and Simon Kirke's drums sound very natural. The great interplay of Paul Rodgers unique gruff soulful voice with Fraser and Kirke holding the rhythym down allowing Paul Kossoff to do as he pleased... wow!
