ISLAND MASTERS Series.
THE FREE STORY is the second greatest hits album by Free, and the first which was released outside of the US. It was released on 31st December 1973 by Island Records. On 22nd July 2013, the album was awarded a Silver certification for UK album sales. The album covers the entire studio album collection of Free from their debut album Tons Of Sobs through to their final studio album Heartbreaker and includes their biggest hit single "All Right Now". It also has two non-Free tracks - ''Just For The Box'', from the album Kossoff Kirke Tetsu Rabbit, and the song ''Lady'', from Rodgers' post-Free group, Peace, which included bassist Stewart McDonald and drummer Mick Underwood. The original intention was to include the version of ''Travelling Man'' by Andy Fraser's 1971 group Toby, but probably at the insistence of Fraser this track was removed and replaced by Free's version. Some German copies of the album have the Toby version. Initial LP copies of the album in the UK had an individual serial number on the front in the manner of The Beatles' The Beatles ("The White Album"). THE FREE STORY reminds us that there is much more to them than standard classics like "Alright Now". This compilation, spanning all six of their albums, opens in true form with the swaggering groove of "I'm A Mover" taken from Tons Of Sobs. Singer Paul Rodgers' soulful wailing and the band's inventive playing brings the blues to life with their own brand of traditional folk and sultry rock. The parade ends with a single track from their final album, Heartbreaker. By this time, founder guitarist Paul Kossoff had left the group, to be replaced by Rodgers on guitar. This accounts for the complimentary song writing on "Come Together In The Morning". Often shadowed by the legendary supergroups of the early 1970s, Free hold a quiet authority as the masters of understatement and pure musical passion. Although record sales never went along with it, Free were British rock at its pinnacle. Their studio albums were superb through and through, while the one live release perhaps represented the band at their peak. The track selection well shows off the bands musical ability, from Paul Kossoff's vibrato-laden guitar to Andy Fraser's captivating bass playing. Indeed, few bands come close to the overall musicianship of Free. People loved Free. They loved the vulnerability of Paul Kossoff, and of course, they loved the songs full of passion and angst. There were various version of THE FREE STORY released around the world with the Canadian/USA version having the guitar headstock of a Les Paul on the cover. The most interesting international release was from Germany. The German version included different artwork and photos. The tracklisting was also different, but it did not flow in the same way as the UK release. It did, however, include a version of ‘Travelling Man’ by ‘Toby’ which had been Andy Fraser’s project at the time. There is no mention of this on the original cover, so this could have been an error. It also made this version very collectable. THE FREE STORY is one of those Best Of albums where fans still want to own a copy even if they have all the records. Free left a legacy of enduring music which became a role model for much of which followed. THE FREE STORY is testament to that heritage. Few would disagree with that statement.
