1 is a compilation album of the English rock band The Beatles, originally released on 13th November 2000. The album features virtually every number-one single the band achieved in the United Kingdom or United States from 1962 to 1970. Issued on the 30th Anniversary of the band's break-up, it was their first compilation available on only one CD. 1 was remastered and reissued in September 2011. It was remixed and reissued again in several different editions on 6th November 2015. The Beatles‘ best-selling 1 compilation was reissued and expanded as CD/DVD set featuring remixed stereo and surround sound and for the first time fully restored full length videos for each of the 27 number one singles. The original promo films, classic television appearances and other carefully selected videos spanning the band’s history have been painstakingly restored with 35mm negatives scanned in 4K and digitally restored along with other processes such as frame-by-frame cleaning and colour-grading. This has created outstanding standards of clarity and quality. The standard two-disc edition CD/DVD feature 27 videos, with bonus content of Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. Exciting though this video content is, the sound is a very big deal since all editions of the new 1 reissue feature newly created stereo and 5.1 Dolby Digital surround audio mixes, produced from the original analogue tapes at Abbey Road Studios. The CD with this package uses the new stereo mixes, not the 2009 remasters.

As one of the best-selling items in The Beatles catalog, 1 is ripe for an anniversary expansion, even if the 15th Anniversary isn't necessarily an auspicious birthday. Nevertheless, Apple/Universal found 2015 the ideal time to once again remastering the original 27-track compilation and, in something of a fan's dream come true, adding the accompanying original promo videos in a single DVD incarnation. Back in 2011, Apple reissued 1 with the 2009 remasters, a significant upgrade over the 2000 original, and if this 2015 edition isn't as startling, it is often notably different, particularly on the earliest singles, which are given bright, muscular new stereo mixes. As good as this sounds, the CD is an afterthought to the first-ever commercial release of The Beatles promo clips. Sequenced to mirror the track listing of 1, along with a host of clips that have never been circulated or were only seen in passing snippets during Anthology. Although there is perhaps one too many posthumous montages and animations on the set, delights abound. Such moments, along with the sterling restoration, are what makes a purchase of 1 necessary for Beatles diehards. But there's still no question that this is all great music. If there's any complaint, it's that even if it's nice to have something like this, it's not really essential. There's really no reason for anyone who owns all the records to get this too - if you've lived happily without the Red or Blue albums, you'll live without this. But, if you give this to any six- or seven-year-old, they'll be a pop fan, even fanatic, for life. And that's reason enough for it to exist.
