For once, one of these "roots-of" collections that so many labels issue to make a quick buck proves to be something close to the real thing. THE ROOTS OF THE BEATLES is a collection of early rock & roll, rockabilly, and rhythm & blues tunes that certainly did inspire the Fab Four. Elsewhere, names like Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, Buddy Holly, and Little Richard will certainly be familiar to fans of The Beatles. This collection is great on a number of levels in that it assembles both well-known and semi-obscure hits by great artists of the era. The two years The Beatles spent playing covers in clubs on the Reeperbahn in Hamburg, Germany taught them the basics of their beloved music and that immersion in all things rock 'n' roll and R'n'B made them the most prolific hitmakers ever. These 23 songs illustrate just where they got it from. The obvious question to ask when considering THE ROOTS OF THE BEATLES is what took Snapper Music so long. In truth the discount label has re-badged the series. Originally named Complete Blues it would have proved difficult to make a case for The Beatles being influenced by the genre. By widening the series' remit and adding Complete Roots to the title Snapper Music have been able to plunder early folk, country and rock and roll artists and, bingo, a host of new possibilities is opened up. As expected THE ROOTS OF THE BEATLES stretches all the way back to the very early days of The Quarrymen and the band's frequent trips to the seedy club circuit in Hamburg where they honed their skills as musicians and performers. Contributions from the likes of Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly, The Coasters and Larry Williams are to be expected. Perhaps more surprising are appearances by Ray Charles, Fats Waller, Nat King Cole and Marlene Dietrich, the latter no doubt going down a storm in Germany. There is nothing included which can be remotely termed weak or unconnected from the subject at hand but, just like The Beatles original material, the songs the band covered have become equally famous and the old adage of familiarity breeding contempt holds true. For those looking for a cheap, one-off album highlighting the music which ignited a musical phenomenon THE ROOTS OF THE BEATLES ticks the boxes.
