The problem with trying to put together a showcase of Beatles influences is just that the Fabs were so damned eclectic, everything they heard influenced them in some way. So we get all the expected early rockers - Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Chuck Berry and, of course, Buddy Holly. But what about Arthur Alexander? The Shirelles? The Beach Boys? Ravi Shankar? Stockhausen? The Byrds? Bob Dylan? All of these folks had just as much or more influence on The Beatles. Oh well. If you are a Beatles fan and don't have much or any 1950s rock, then this is a nifty enough collection. Although if you do have at least some 1950s rock, you'll probably already own at least one or two of the tracks. You would like the inclusion of a George Formby track? George Harrison in particular was a Formby nut, and you can pick up on Formby's influence on The Beatles' collective sense of humour. Although if you're going to include George Formby, why not The Goons, the primary source for the surrealistic Beatles humour? While The Beatles are known first and foremost as composers of the finest songs the world has ever known, they never shied away from wearing there own musical influences smack bang on their sleeves. And like other master songsmiths such as Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin, the Fab Four recorded cover version after cover version during their career, adding their own twist to their personal favourites. This collection features songs that either were covered in performance by The Beatles, or influenced their song-writing, or were personal or collective favourites of the boys. Two of the songs featured here were included in John Lennon's own portable jukebox. This collection traces the formative sounds that were influential in the development of the members of the Beatles up to the time that Lennon and McCartney met and began playing together.
