STONY ROAD: THE ULTIMATE FAN COLLECTION is studio album by British singer-songwriter Chris Rea, released on 29th September 2003 in Germany by Edel Records with one CD and one DVD. THE ULTIMATE FAN COLLECTION includes an CD STONY ROAD album with another different cover art plus DVD with 75 minute documentary, 20 minute exclusive concert footage from Cologne, featuring: ''Let's Dance'', ''Nothing To Fear'', ''On The Beach'', ''Josephine'', ''Road To Hell'', ''Let's Dance Final'' and interviews plus Chris Rea's gallery of paintings. In 2001 Rea was struck down with a severe case of Pancreatitis, later revealed to have been cancerous. The operation that he went in for only assured him a 50% chance of survival. He has stated in interviews since that he swore to himself before the operation that if he survived he would return to his blues roots and pack in the commercial rock business. Needless to say the man survived, and STONY ROAD the best album of his entire career, was the resulting masterpiece, including of course The Road To Hell. He uses his exceptional slide guitar playing to great effect, his vocals are deep and charred, emphasising the blues themes in his writing, and the production raw and sparse. With thirteen fresh tracks, STONY ROAD is nearly fifty minutes of stomping blues work-outs, un-nerving slide guitar soloing, cajun grooves and great earth-shaking vocals. Plus the sound of one man dancing coming back from The Road To Hell.
PERSONNEL: Chris Rea – vocals, acoustic piano, organ, guitars, producer, paintings; Ed Hession – accordion; Robert Ahwai – guitars; Gerry O'Connor – banjo; Sylvin Marc – bass; Martin Ditcham – drums.
This the album East West Records in the UK refused to release. Finally Rea’s well-gargled voice makes complete sense as he rambles through electrified delta blues. The opening track, ''Changing Times'', an unusual upbeat and optimistic jaunt. ''Easy Rider'', is an ode to the drugs that eased his agony whilst lying in hospital contemplating a potential meeting with the reaper. ''Stony Road'' is a haunting paranoia, ''Dancing The Blues Away'' an airy waltz and ''Burning Feet'' is a cool groove. ''Mississippi 2'' is very traditional with a fascinating banjo/harmonica duel, ''Slow Dance'' a piano led number that leads into a slide guitar frenzy. ''When The Good Lord Talked To Jesus'' is a very deep, agonizing self assessment, and ''Heading For The City'', a jazzy, laid back chagrin in which Rea's morbid state of mind exposes itself. He had practically handed himself over to the angels, which makes this music that he created, with the hindsight of survival, even more engrossing. ''So Lonely'' an eerie and uncertain plea from the subconscious, and ''Someday My Peace Will Come'' a beautiful longing for one's sanctuary. Penultimate track, ''The Hustler'', a great insight into the healing mind of this ailing songwriter. The final track, ''Give That Girl A Diamond'', is a wonderful love song, a convincing tribute to Chris Rea’s life-long sweetheart and wife Joan. Chris Rea has absolutely excelled himself with this album. It is special because it is almost his own obituary. It is funny how a genuine brush with death can inspire the most beautiful art. At times it is very, very dark, but somehow inspiring and uplifting. Give the old boy a chance, give this gem a listen and watch.
