Chris Rea- DANCING DOWN THE STONY ROAD- 2CD- 2002- Jazzee Blue/Navybeck Ltd.- 5050491001920- 500 grn
DANCING DOWN THE STONY ROAD is the seventeenth studio album by British singer-songwriter Chris Rea, released on 20th September 2002 on his own record label, Jazzee Blue. The album was also released in Europe by Edel under the shorter title Stony Road with different cover art and only one CD, except Germany, while the original UK is double CD edition with additional tracks. The album is notable for its change of Rea's previous rock music style to Delta blues and gospel blues. DANCING DOWN THE STONY ROAD was released in a regular double CD edition, and Deluxe Edition issued in three-fold Digipak, with First CD enhanced with selected scenes from the accompanying DVD documentary, as well with 24 page lyric booklet. In 2001 Rea was struck down with a severe case of Pancreatitis, later revealed to have been cancerous. The operation that he went in for only assured him a 50% chance of survival. He has stated in interviews since that he swore to himself before the operation that if he survived he would return to his blues roots and pack in the commercial rock business. Needless to say the man survived, and DANCING DOWN THE STONY ROAD the best album of his entire career, including The Road To Hell, was the resulting masterpiece. Chris Rea's obsession with the Delta blues is heavily prevalent in this album. He uses his exceptional slide guitar playing to great effect, his vocals are deep and charred, emphasising the blues themes in his writing, and the production raw and sparse. It is a late night album for sure. One for the whiskey drinkers and insomniacs, or, preferably both.
PERSONNEL: Chris Rea – vocals, acoustic piano, organ, guitars, producer, paintings; Ed Hession – accordion; Robert Ahwai – guitars; Gerry O'Connor – banjo; Sylvin Marc – bass; Martin Ditcham – drums.
This is the album East West Records in the UK refused to release, so it must be worth a listen or two. And it is, and much more. The world might not have been staying up late waiting for a double-CD of moaning delta blues and stirring gospel tunes from Chris Rea, but then the world has never been too hot at knowing what it needs, no more than record company dullards are. Yes, it’s a long way from ‘'Fool (If You Think It’s Over)'', but finally Rea’s well-gargled voice makes complete sense as he rambles through electrified delta blues that echo the works of his hero Charley Patton. Along the road it tips the hat towards JJ Cale, Robert Johnson, Ry Cooder, Leadbelly, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Son House too, without ever letting you forget that these songs and sounds are the outpouring of a soul far too long in hock to the men in suits. The opening track ‘'Easy Rider'’ sets the tone for the journey with its evocative slide guitar, groaning vocals and its intense, brooding atmosphere. ‘'Dancing The Blues Away'’ is driven by the accordion of Ed Hession with Rea’s voice in top form. The slinky ‘'Qualified'’ has wit and elegance and is reminiscent of Cream/Willie Dixon’s ‘'Spoonful'’. Gerry O’Connor infiltrates his banjo to superb effect, especially on the autobiographical ‘'Stony Road'’. The second CD ends appropriately with ‘'Give That Girl A Diamond'’, a convincing tribute to Rea’s life-long sweetheart and wife Joan. With twenty fresh tracks only occasionally spoiled by the use of over-worked blues cliches, DANCING DOWN THE STONY ROAD is nearly ninety minutes of stomping blues work-outs, un-nerving slide guitar soloing, cajun grooves and great earth-shaking vocals. Plus the sound of one man dancing coming back from The Road To Hell.
