Chris Rea- THE ROAD TO HELL PART 2- CD- 1999/2004-
- EastWest/Magnet Records Ltd./Warner Music- 685738064021- 400 grn
THE ROAD TO HELL PART 2 is the fifteenth studio album by British singer-songwriter Chris Rea, released in 1999, ten years after The Road To Hell. Chris Rea released an abundance of good/great music over a long period. He's release Dancing Down The Stony Road is a brilliant display of Rea's gift of the blues, a style in which Rea has apparently been yearning to record in for many a year now, but was blocked from doing so by his record contract. Road To Hell was a big, big seller for Rea and was a great album, it sold stacks. This sequel of sorts was obviously an attempt to ''cash in'' on the credibility of that first release. Most of the album's ''theme'' is basically a rehash of the first album is well. One of most annoying feature on this CD is some guy mumbling in the background for what seems for the entire playing length. Rea attempts reggae on one track. No Chris, just stick to what you know mate. All in all, this is Rea's weakest release up to that time.
PERSONNEL: Chris Rea – vocals, keyboards, guitars; Sylvin Marc – bass; Martin Ditcham – drums; Kiadan Quinn – drum programming; Bud Beadle – saxophone; Debbie Longworth, Julie Isaac – backing vocals.
But anyway THE ROAD TO HELL PART 2 commendably tries something different with programmed beats, keyboards and female vocals dominating the sound. The guitar takes a back seat to exploring jazz, trip hop, reggae, latin, dance and even rap... You never thought you'd hear chris do rap, and you could happily avoid hearing it again. There maybe many ways to get to hell, but If you are already on one, why entertain a second one? To be fair, there are reasonable moments, mostly found on the second half, like "Keep On Dancing" and "Firefly". But one has to get through the brain-numbing first half. It is certainly not a standard Chris Rea's album. There are elements of Rap, Techno, Hip-hop and various other ''alien'' styles including some mean jazzy sax. This is a recording that demands an open mind and a distinct lack of preconceptions. Chris's unique vocal stylings are still much in evidence here as well as some serious guitar pyrotechnics in places. This is a virtual one-man project from Rea who does pretty well everything but the sax and backing vocals - obviously looking to experiment with different ideas and as a whole the album succeeds. Originally expected it to be a complete lemon - like Pink Floyd's The Final Cut but it isn't - it is a triumph of experimentation and mould -breaking, much in the line of Neil Young's Trans or Joni Mitchell's Dog Eat Dog. But you can understand why hard-core Rea fans absolutely hate this - it lacks the usual smooth love songs and slick guitar parts. The band has been replaced by drum machines and bleeping synths, which you either like or don't. But you must applaud an artist who follows his muse - even if it takes them into unfamiliar territory or brings them into an area of lesser succes. Without these abberations, truly creative souls wither and die in stagnation. Just giving the people what they want all the time might be good for your bank balance but it might leave you creatively bankrupt. This record is, at best, a curio in Chris Rea's catalogue. At worst... well...let's just try to stay positive. So keep going Chris, do what the ''Hell'' you like. This ''Road'' has been followed and there are more to tread.
