GOD’S GREAT BANANA SKIN is the twelfth studio album by British singer-songwriter Chris Rea, released on 2nd November 1992. The album was not released in the United States, though some tracks later appeared on the US release of Rea's following album Espresso Logic. This is a very dreamy and bluesy album by Chris Rea which finds him in great form. We have another long intro, featuring Rea's bottleneck to extension, moody opener ''Nothing To Fear" is a classic. From the start this one and "Miles Is A Cigarette" made sure that, Chris Rea still continued to "paint with thick colours". And, in spite of "Miles Is A Cigarette" being a really wonderful, jazzy tribute to Miles Davis, the thicker the sound-pad, the more he and his band sounded lustless and tired on those slow songs. ''Miles Is A Cigarette'' is beautiful enough to touch the listener and continues in the same dreamy vein. But slow songs aren't all there is on the album. There's the will to capture more of a "live"-feel with several mid- and uptempo-songs, too. The title track is another cool song. It's alright. Nothing too exciting but a bit more upbeat, at least. Max Middleton laying a rather simple keyboard-string-pad and the band falling into this comfortable groove going on and on until the end - while Rea's bariton-voice is chanting a beautiful but somewhat foreseeable melody, but the whole mood, that slide-guitar and the lyrics, also, go to your heart. Some great slide guitar playing and support from his band, but rea feels short on inspiration here songwriting wise. Only the first three tracks pass muster.

The next two songs don't add much value. The "90's Blues" is a fine one. A pompous hybrid of blues, march or broadway musical with string-arrangement, but afterwards the album does not carry on that heavy-weight-feel with which it started out. "Too Much Pride" had been chosen for single-release. In hope to make it a hit they did a re-recording of it, but the album-version is owning even more commercial appeal. But the album picks up again with ''Boom Boom'' and ''I Ain't The Fool''. "I Ain't The Fool" and "There She Goes" carry on in the same vein. Chris Rea on autopilot. Other highlights are "I'm Ready" a rockier number and ''Black Dog''. By now you don't expect much anymore. Your attention may turn elsewhere and you probably don't even notice that with "I'm ready" and "Black Dog" you've just heard the best songs of the album one after the other. By now the band has developed a certain drive and, with repeated listens at least, you oughta get hooked. "I'm ready" should have been the single, it's an uplifting ear-wig. But that "Black Dog" is even better, it's biting you from behind! It's a mean, mean grower cause it doesn't grab you immediately. Rea's heart and mind is inside that song, the lyrics are so personal that it started haunting you, don't have another explanation. And suddenly it was there: the groove, the feel, the fun, the real life. The album ends on a high note with "Soft Top, Hard Shoulder" a much poppier song. "Soft Top, Hard Shoulder" has stayed what it always was: another Rea song about his other passion driving/racing cars. In the snug world of centrally-heated adult rock, Chris Rea offers a reminder that he plays a handy slide-guitar, and creates chunky chordscapes which perfectly complement the gravelly rasp of his voice.
