NEW LIGHT THROUGH OLD WINDOWS is the first compilation album by British singer-songwriter Chris Rea, released on 17th October 1988. The album consists primarily of re-recordings of songs from Rea's earlier albums, as well as the new track "Working On It". NEW LIGHT THROUGH OLD WINDOWS is a significant baker's dozen of Chris Rea's early material, but not including work from his Road To Hell album. Rea's soothing voice is indeed attractive, and the songs that are included on this set are wisely chosen examples of his smooth style. "I Can Hear Your Heartbeat" from Water Sign and "Stainsby Girls" off Shamrock Diaries are two of the better tracks that showcase his slick, demure-like manner. "On The Beach", from his best-selling album of the same name, and his highest charted single in the U.K., the perky "Let's Dance", represent a lean toward a more commercial sound. "Ace Of Hearts", "Josephine" and "Candles" all focus on Rea's softer side. After its release, NEW LIGHT THROUGH OLD WINDOWS peaked at number five in the U.K., proving that this compendium can be a substitute for most of Chris Rea's early work, with the exception of Water Sign, On The Beach, and Shamrock Diaries, which stand up well on their own. NEW LIGHT THROUGH OLD WINDOWS still holds up as an excellent starting point for those who want to investigate the high points of his first ten years.

Chris Rea has an absolutely tremendous voice. Sort of like a cross between a bulldog chewing a wasp and a rumble of thunder in a storm drain. He first came attention through Noel Edmonds On BBC Radio 1 who seemed to bestow every Chris Rea single release with the dubious honour of being his record of the week. Not that it did the man any real good. The songs would chart but never at a level which suggested he was increasing his appeal. It's fine having a distinctive voice but equally important is the material needed to feed it. Chris Rea writes well but his songs could never be accused of being contemporary. With a voice like his Chris would have found more critical recognition and nostalgic fondness by aiming at a Leonard Cohen introspective style rather than upmarket pop. The beauty of Chris Rea is in the details, the simple but memorable guitar, the ability to touch the memory of a fondly remembered relationship. He somehow manages to be unassuming and incisive at the same time. Instead of just putting out a dozen old tracks Rea opted to re-record his best known songs with a couple of newbies for this collection with his live band. Even though Rea doesn't take any chances with the songs and plays them pretty straight, it comes over with the freshness of a live performance. Not an artist that immediately springs to mind, but one that has been working steadily in the background plying his trade for years. Once you become acquainted with his music, you soon discover just what a great songwriter and guitar player he is. His gruff Teesside accent can take a little getting used to. It has an honest and homely quality about it. This is not a true "best of" compilation. Chris Rea actually re-recorded and reworked versions of his better known songs. They are so faithful to the originals and the differences are so subtle that it's hard to tell them apart. They just sound fresher, akin to painting your old house the same colour, but with a fresh lick of paint.
