ON THE BEACH is the eighth studio album by British singer-songwriter Chris Rea, released in April 1986, and built on the success of the preceding Shamrock Diaries. In 2019, a deluxe remastered version of the album was released. The perfect album for a day at the beach, Rea's eighth album takes the listener from the water's edge of the title song to the sunny fields of the French countryside in "Giverny". The upbeat reggae feel of "Lucky Day" works particularly well, but it is "On The Beach" that's the standout track. Rea seems to think so, too, as he's recorded it numerous times. The version here, though, is the most evocative, a little slower and more meditative than others. The lyrics, as in many of his songs, deal with remembrance and old love. "Little Blonde Plaits", "Hello Friend" and "It's All Gone" are other examples of this theme that appear on the album. ON THE BEACH is an excellent introduction to his brighter, more optimistic songwriting. Over the years, ON THE BEACH has become one of Rea's most succesful albums and ranks as one of his best. IThat's just a matter of personal taste, not quality, really, cause in the end, this one's just as good. We've grown older with it and learned to treasure it very high just as it is - a feel-good album for a sunny day. But not only. It's a very fine album for dark days as well, if you're in need of harmony for any other reason...

This is a very, very beautiful album. Like with Shamrock Diaries, there's been a lot of care and love that went into the arrangements and production, but the songs are very fine as well, with magnificent slowies and relaxed, uplifting tunes. Max Middleton's work on this album is awesome, adding a slight Jazz/Swing-flavour with his piano to several tracks and providing great Rhodes-soloing. But Kevin Leach is doing stuff just as fine with the synths, creating atmosphere all of the time with lovely additions and several splendid details, and it's this album on which the acoustic guitars have been played in a "never-again"-brilliant manner. The album cover perfectly reflects the record’s mood. If you’d like to be on an empty beach early September this is the best choice. The opening titletrack isn’t the radio version with that famous echoing smooth guitar riff, ''the'' riff is appearing only once in the closing section. But this is a great song nevertheless. The first ten tracks are all flowing great. ''Auf Immer Und Ewig'' is a beauty melancholy song. ''Freeway'' is its evident continuation with similar beauty. The last two tracks bring a kind of tired feeling, however the closing one is surprisingly positive, even though a weak song, makes a moderate optimistic closure. This is a very good choice. Shamrock Diaries was a rockier affair and its lyrics often tinged with childhood nostalgia while ON THE BEACH is a much more relaxed set, the arrangements light, jazzy almost pointillistic at times, giving it a sort of chill-out vibe. Rea convincingly maintains the mood pretty much from start to finish and you certainly could do much worse if you wanted a laid-back soundtrack to any visits to the beach you might be planning this summer than this enjoyable, rewarding album.
