WIRED TO THE MOON is the sixth studio album by British singer-songwriter Chris Rea, released in April 1984. With the success of the band Incantation and ethnic South American music in 1982-1983, Chris Rea introduced his sixth album, WIRED TO THE MOON, with the track "Bombollini", which was over six minutes of jungle-sounding drums and the haunting sound of pan pipes. The ethnic flavor continued on the second track, "Touché d'Amour", which was reggae in the unashamed style of lovers rock. However, Rea wasn't going to disappoint his fans altogether, having built a career over several albums of soft rock tracks and midtempo ballads with Dire Straits-style guitar breaks, and the rest of the tracks on WIRED TO THE MOON fell easily into this category, especially "Shine, Shine, Shine" and "Holding Out", which were lovely emotive ballads. Meanwhile, "Ace Of Hearts", the title track, and the final song, "Winning", were soft rock numbers crying out for daytime radio play or a top-selling commercial artist to cover them. Yet again, the record company released just one single from a Rea album. The one they chose from WIRED TO THE MOON was the uptempo Elton John-style track "I Don't Know What It Is But I Love It". You can't argue with their tenacity, as the song yet again flopped badly. Even this, however, was a considerable improvement for a Chris Rea album, and one had to applaud Magnet Records for having faith in an artist who obviously pleased some people with his music, even if a lot of people didn't buy it.

Not quite as good as Water Sign ... but still a worthy follow-up to its predecessor. The songs may need some time to grow on the listener, and it's a real good album to relax to. There are many reasons not to like this album, and there are an equal number of reasons to like it as well. Of course there’s the track “Bombollini”, featuring haunting jungle inspired drums along with pan pipes, ethnic flavors. A white man’s vision of what he knows not, music that requires not thought or internal soul, taking up space where listeners would fare far better with the tranquil quietness of their own thoughts rather than allow Chris Rea to weave them down a never ending path into oblivion. Even Calder’s mobiles, which inspired the album art offer WIRED TO THE MOON is adult contemporary music that didn’t slowly ebb into that genre. The album was born there, fully formed and conceived in that warm realm as cinematic atmospheric background washes that simply flounder outside of that meaningless context. Now, if you find this record able to fill your needs, or even one of them, then by all means, slip into its warm calculated arms and feel comforted, nurtured and at peace. The album’s title, WIRED TO THE MOON, is not simply an expressive creation, the phrase makes the implication that someone wired to the moon is in fact not all there or completely in tact, suffering from delusions with the inability to distinguish reality from fantasy. WIRED TO THE MOON it's good but it feels a little indecisive - but you feel that Rea finally got to where he wanted. WIRED TO THE MOON over the years since sounds great. All the songs are really strong, with the title track being the icing on a very delicious cake. A very understated album that doesn't feel the need to shout out loud, but instead delivers it's message with grace and subtlety.
