WATER SIGN is the fifth studio album by British singer-songwriter Chris Rea, released in March 1983. It sold well in Ireland, prompting Rea to mount an extensive tour there, which marked the beginning of an upswing in the musician's fortunes. The record company would not fund WATER SIGN, forcing Chris Rea to use tracks that had been intended as demos. As a result, Rea plays most instruments on the album, and, unusually, drum machines feature. The founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival, Claude Nobs, plays harmonica on the opening track, which is his only appearance on a studio album. Chris Rea remained one of the best-kept secrets in the music industry, releasing five albums between 1979 and 1983. All were very well received by both the critics and the public who knew the secret. His secret was a brand of late-night rock that had an element of class, not dissimilar at this stage of his career to the early-'80s Dire Straits albums. He opened the album WATER SIGN with the song "Nothing's Happening By The Sea", which was so far laid back it was almost horizontal, with a harmonica instrumental break, and the album closed with a nod to synth pop on the track "Out Of The Darkness". "Love's Strange Ways" was a similarly slow-moving Dire Straits-style number with an acoustic guitar picking out some notes throughout the song. "Let It Loose" had a driving rock beat, as did "I Can Hear Your Heartbeat", the only single taken from WATER SIGN. By the time Rea got around to releasing a hits compilation, this track was radically remixed with a slick guitar added and less of the drum machine. One track, "Texas", was to become popular via radio play in the States but also as music played at Texas Rangers baseball games. One day soon, a lot more people would discover Chris Rea, but in the meantime, in the era of WATER SIGN he remained a relative mystery.

Chris Rea's first heavily over produced album sees him hitting a musical high, but the strength of the material is compromised by the production on WATER SIGN. The better songs do pull the albums dire production values out of the gutter somewhat. This album sounds dated, as the songs for the most part equal his best work from his previous three efforts. Rea's record company wasn't too interested in his new album - and instead of offering money in order to produce it, they released the demo. So that's why Rea played most of the instruments all by himself then. He did a very good job. From all his poppier efforts - WATER SIGN is Chris Rea's best album. It's full of energy and shining with a selection of first-rate compositions that fitted well into the 80s whilest retaining the personal, sensitive feel of its songwriter. So this is probably the best demo ever made. It sounds fresh and alive while some later albums sound rather tired. It's got uplifting pop-rock-tunes, athmospheric ballads, relaxed chillers and ear-wigs composition. The record did very well and did enough to sustain him til he found success later. This album is a fine example of his ''hidden'' talent. It's a good combination of fine guitar work, trademark gravelly vocals and a sprinkling of eighties electronica. There aren't really any substandard tracks to complain about. All in all a solid example of earlyish Rea and not to be missed.
