Chris Rea- DELTICS- CD- 1979/1998-
- EastWest Records/Magnet Records Ltd./Warner Communications Company- 022924236921- 400 grn
DELTICS is the second studio album by British singer-songwriter Chris Rea. It was released in March 1979 on Magnet Records. Indeed, whatever happened to Benny Santini? The name that Magnet Records were considering using for their new solo signing but instead he went with his real name of Chris Rea, and DELTICS was his second album after Whatever Happened To Benny Santini? and his first to reach the charts. Named DELTICS after the British Rail class 55 of diesel locomotive trains that were built in the early '60s and were just about to be withdrawn from service, Rea showed his interest in various forms of transport that would continue throughout his recording career. He took a leaf out of the Elton John songbook with the opening track "Twisted Wheel" which has a thumping piano running throughout and a melody not unlike Elton's song "Part Time Love". This style was continued on the song "Dance! (Don't Think)" and the one single taken from DELTICS, the track "Diamonds". However, there was a variety on the album that showed great promise, from these uptempo numbers to the great atmospheric guitar work on the title track and the ballads "She Gave It Away" and "The Things That Lovers Do". "Raincoat And A Rose" was obviously going to tug at the heartstrings with a string section during the intro and the chorus, and the song did turn out to be about forbidden love while the track "Cenotaph" was an interesting two-minute instrumental that led into the more rock-oriented "Letter From Amsterdam". Because Rea's career has lasted so long, still enjoying hit albums in the 21st century, his early work, which was not as commercially successful, is sometimes overlooked and DELTICS is a prime example, a great album, hardly ever mentioned.
PERSONNEL: Chris Rea – lead and backing vocals, pianos, synthesizers, accordion, acoustic guitar, 12-string acoustic guitar, electric guitars, slide guitar; Graham Watson – organ; Kevin Peek, Martin Jenner, Eddie Guy – acoustic guitar; Mick Hutchinson – bass; Norman Nosebait – drums; Morris Pert, Gus Dudgeon – percussion; Bruce Baxter – brass, string; Steve Gregory – brass, saxophone solo; Stuart Epps, Joy Yates, Liza Strike, Vicki Brown – backing vocals.
One of his early records and it appears Chris Rea is still defining his sound. Rea is still clearly finding his way on this record. All of its content is serviceable and inoffensive, but there isn't particularly anything which grabs the listener's attention too much. Things liven up near the end of first half with one of the highlights of the album ''Raincoat And A Rose'' followed by the riffing ''Letters From Amsterdam''. The largely instrumental title track is also quite fun, but the record slugs to its end on second half. Some songs sound particularly Elton John-esque, others try and dip their toes in disco, listen ''Dance! (Don't Think)'', and a few bland tracks end the album with ''No Qualifications'' and ''Seabird''. This album didn't provide Chris Rea with any big hits. This is a testament to the lack of excitement this record provides, but equally the brilliance which was to come later. This record reeks of the sound of Elton John which. Rea hardly gets to use his trademark slide guitar on here, maybe in the title track and the next track ''Diamonds''. Anyway, the rest are ''nice'' in a boring but safe kind of way, like something you would have listened to on radio back in the 80's on his way to work or sat listening at the weekend reading the Sunday Papers and drinking lots of coffee. Rea's blues roots and slide guitar virtuosity would come to the forefront later, but his 70's and 80's pop material are still near and dear. Chris Rea's nice as usual.
