WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BENNY SANTINI? is the debut album by the British singer-songwriter Chris Rea, released in June 1978. The title of the album is a reference to a name Rea's UK record label Magnet Records had considered christening him with to make him sound more attractive commercially. The first single lifted from the album, "Fool (If You Think It's Over)", remains his biggest hit in the United States. Though he had already cut a single, "So Much Love", for Magnet Records in 1975, this was Chris Rea's first full-length album. While "So Much Love" had basically disappeared quickly upon its release, the song "Fool (If You Think It's Over)" from WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BENNY SANTINI? became his largest hit, especially in the U.S., where it was nominated for a Grammy. The rest of the album is somewhat mediocre, with too-polished production. The songs on WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BENNY SANTINI? are a mix of well-crafted, if unexciting, guitar rock pop songs and wistful ballads. What makes the album stand out from similar late-'70s middle-of-the-road rock pop is Rea's voice. A gravelly, warm baritone. The album presented for the first time his husky voice, smooth grooving melodies and excellent guitar playing, which together became the hallmark of his great success.

Musically, Chris Rea was something of a late developer. Chris only bought his first guitar when he was twenty-two. This seemed to give Chris a sense of purpose. Before this he was drifting. Magnet Records wanted Chris to adopt the stage name Benny Santini. They felt Benny Santini had more commercial appeal than Chris Rea. However, Chris wasn’t happy with this idea. He stood his ground, and when the time came to give his debut album a title, WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BENNY SANTINI? seemed apt. Benny Santini was no more. Instead, it was Chris Rea who entered the studio early in 1978. The ten tracks on WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BENNY SANTINI? Chris Rea introduces you to a cast of characters. This includes gamblers, losers, lovers and those that have loved and lost. They play their part in WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BENNY SANTINI?, a well crafted, polished album, where elements of blues, country, pop and rock sit side-by-side. WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BENNY SANTINI? Chris Rea’s debut album, was the album that launched Chris Rea’s five decade career.
