BLOW UP YOUR VIDEO is the eleventh studio album by Australian hard rock band AC/DC. The album was released on 18th January 1988 and re-released in 2003 as part of the AC/DC Remasters Series. AC/DC remained a popular concert draw throughout the '80s, although such albums as Flick Of The Switch and Fly On The Wall failed to replicate their mass U.S. commercial success of 1980-1981. But the successful soundtrack for Stephen King's lackluster movie Maximum Overdrive, titled Who Made Who, put AC/DC back on the right track commercially. Their first new studio album of all-new material in three years, 1988's BLOW UP YOUR VIDEO turned out to be their most successful album since 1981's For Those About To Rock We Salute You, even though it was chock full of filler. The driving album opener, "Heatseeker," turned out to be a surprising Top Ten single in the U.K., while the anthemic "That's The Way I Want To Rock 'N' Roll" proved to be another highlight. But from there on (with the exception of "Kissin' Dynamite" and "This Means War"), it gets pretty unfocused. The album is glutted with such throwaways as "Nick Of Time," "Ruff Stuff," and "Two's Up" - completely missing the point of what made such previous albums as Back In Black so great (they simply did not contain a weak moment). BLOW UP YOUR VIDEO also marked the return of AC/DC's early production team, Harry Vanda and George Young, who man the boards for the first time since 1978's If You Want Blood You've Got It album.

While not their best album it's definitely heads above anything that came out around that time. In the time of hair bands and extremely image conscious rock music AC/DC showed they weren't budging an inch or deviating from their course. This album is their least inspired effort but by no means a bad album. Why the B-sides and outtakes from these sessions didn't replace a few of the tracks they did choose we'll never know but it could've been a much better album with them included. Check out Backtracks to see. Anyways it's a must own for the hardcore faithful but probably not a great starting place to really understand the caliber of the band. Most great bands reach a level of success that puts them in a comfort zone to experiment with musical styles. AC/DC has definitely reached that stage in their career at the time they made BLOW UP YOUR VIDEO but they have chosen to do what they have always done & that is to make another Hard Rock album! At a time when MTV was at its influential peak saturated with Big hair ballad bands AC/DC tells the musical industry & world of Rock & Roll to Blow up your video, a musical middle finger to MTV and the idea that you have to have a video to be a success in the music industry. For those not old enough to remember bands did not find it necessary to create some artsy fartsy music video to become successful all they needed to do was sound great. From their very beginning until their most recent album release all AC/DC wanted to do was Hard Rock, and they have never failed to do that very thing. Music is an art form so each individual has their personal preferences but it cannot be denied that every AC/DC album ever made Rocks And Rocks Hard. Mission accomplished !!!
