There have always been icons and outstanding figures in rock 'n' roll and probably always will be. What had been working hard to create myths since the time of the late Hank Williams, who died in the early 1950s, was when a really great figurehead gave up the spoon far too early. “Live hard, die young” - was once even a (pretty stupid) battle cry of an entire movement or an entire generation. Very soon the entire scene was sobered by the gaping holes created by the departures of people like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison (to name just a few). One of these icons gone too soon was Ronald Belford 'Bon' Scott, born in Scotland and emigrating to Australia with his parents at the tender age of five. He tried his hand at bands like The Spektors, The Valentines and Fraternity for about ten years before joining the band AC/DC in 1974 brought the big turning point and led both himself and the entire band to the top. There are said to be quite a few hardcore fans of the band who consider the years with Bon as frontman to be the best or - even more extreme - the only true ones. Bon Scott died a (pretty lousy) rock'n'roll death in an acquaintance's car after a night of heavy drinking in London in February 1980 at the age of just 33. Be that as it may, on what would have been Scott's seventieth birthday, the Cannonball Production label released a four-CD box set called HELL AIN’T A BAD PLACE TO BE (IN MEMORY OF BON SCOTT) in recognition and honor Scott onto the market. And even if the recordings contained here have been available individually for some time, this box is still a nice gesture that. Most of the recordings come from radio broadcasts of concerts from 1977 to 1979.

CD1 - Live At The Agora Ballroom, Cleveland, Ohio, August 22nd, 1977;
CD2 - Live At The Old Waldorf, San Francisco, California, September 3rd, 1977;
CD3 - Live At The Paradise Theatre, Boston, Massachusetts, August 21st, 1978;
CD4 - Live At The State College, Towson, Maryland, October 16th, 1979.

The first CD starts off very well with the show from Cleveland, Ohio. A very good sound for the conditions at the time, although as expected it is not optimal. In addition to standards such as "Rocker", "The Jack", "High Voltage" and "Problem Child", later rarely played pieces such as "Baby, Please Don't Go" and "She's Got Balls" are also used here. Unfortunately, the second concert, just a few weeks later in San Francisco, was significantly worse in terms of sound. Nevertheless, there is also the bonus of rarely played tracks like “Kicked In The Teeth” or “Up To My Neck In You”. Fast forward to 1978, the gig in Boston, Massachusetts and a sound that was significantly more optimized than its predecessor. A great show that, in addition to the standard program, also includes "Gone Shootin'" and "Dog Eat Dog". A great bonus here is an interview with Bon Scott from 1977. Show in Towson, Maryland, just four and a half months before Scott's death - not only is more or less the program from the official live record If You Want Blood You've Got It played here, but it also includes "Highway To Hell", "Shot Down In Flames" and (the song) "If You Want Blood (You've Got It)" also includes three numbers from the 1979 classic album in the program. Definitely a nice box for everyone who doesn't have these recordings in their closet yet, who likes the band and enjoys authentic concerts, even if the sound isn't always optimal.
