Hugh Laurie- DIDN’T IT RAIN: Deluxe Edition- 2CD- 2013- Warner Music UK Limited- 825646457106- 850 grn
DIDN’T IT RAIN is the second studio album by English actor and musician Hugh Laurie. Recorded in Ocean Way Studios in Los Angeles in January 2013, the album contains several blues songs (like its predecessor, Let Them Talk). Unlike his previous album, however, Laurie also branches further into other Southern US and South American genres, including jazz, R&B, and tango. Similarly to Let Them Talk, Laurie once again plays piano and guitar, and often provides vocals. Additionally, Laurie is joined by guest musicians Gaby Moreno, Jean McClain, and Taj Mahal, and is supported throughout by the Copper Bottom Band. This release sees Laurie move away from the New Orleans sound as he takes the listener on a musical tour of the American heartland instead. DIDN’T IT RAIN was released in the UK on 6 May 2013. Also was providing a 2CD Special Book Edition. DIDN’T IT RAIN was released in the United States on 6 August 2013. Limited Deluxe Book Edition includes five extra bonus tracks alongside over 34 color pages of exclusive photographs and content. The miniature piano seen on the album artwork was given to Laurie on a 2009 episode of Friday Night With Jonathan Ross.

His blues bona fides buttressed by his 2011 debut album Let Them Talk, Hugh Laurie returns with DIDN’T IT RAIN, another collection of jazz and blues standards, usually of the New Orleans variety but not always - his heart will sometimes stray to Kansas City. If Let Them Talk had a slightly burnished, rich veneer, DIDN’T IT RAIN is a bit lighter, with Laurie content to let himself slip into the background as both pianist and vocalist, which is odd as he has considerably fewer guests here than he did on his debut. Apart from Taj Mahal, this is pretty self-contained, Laurie playing the boogie with his band, sometimes lying back and letting his backing singers steal the spotlight, which they do with ease. Nobody is concerned with reinterpreting the songs or surprising a listener, they just want to enjoy re-creating sounds and tunes they've loved, an attitude that's rarely alienating although it's never quite infectious, either. All involved love the boogie and love the swing, happy to hit the accents hard and draw out the eighth notes, and if there's never a compelling reason to listen to Laurie and crew tackle these well-loved tunes, nobody involved embarrasses themselves, and it's a pretty enjoyable way to while away a lazy Sunday afternoon.
