Hugh Laurie is talented. Like, really talented. He’s a writer, an actor, a director, a comedian and a musician. What a git. Album LET THEM TALK was Laurie’s love letter to the blues genre. He basically decided to have a go at doing beloved blues songs with the help of his band. The production and talent put into the album is very high, with Laurie playing piano and vocals and his band backing him up. Laurie uses an American accent whilst singing. You kept forgetting that this wasn’t “Doctor House sings the blues” but actually an English gentlemen. He manages to make it work, although his voice isn’t the strongest in the land. It’s decent and does the job. What is worth noting however, is the expertise of the instruments. Hugh is very creative with the piano, and the rest of his band are immensely talented. They know how to work together, rather than trying to stand out amongst each other, which results in a super slick, professional tone that runs throughout the whole album. This being a blues album, it’s quite depressing. It’s definitely not unexpected, but that being the nature of the blues. And you'll never felt like saying “Alright, that’s enough for now”. We start with the haunting keys of ''St James’ Infirmary'', which introduces us to the world of blues. A fantastic piece which springboards the rest of the experience. Then we’re launched into the raucous ‘You Don’t Know My Mind’ lovely and angry, that kind of blues that says “Screw you!” to the world. From there we’re given a brilliant range of songs, from the story driven ‘'Battle Of Jericho’' to an amazing cover of ‘'Tipitina'’ and on and on. Lots of special guests are on here, with the likes of the fantastic Dr John, Irma Thomas and even Sir Tom Jones having a good time on various tracks. The only gripe that I have with this album is that, it doesn’t break any new ground. Blues is a genre that knows what it is, but you wouldn’t be able to point out anything that makes Hugh Laurie truly unique. That being said, he can play a mean piano, and could probably hold his own against many of blues’ top musician. Overall, LET THEM TALK is a fantastic album that any blues fan would be proud to own. Everything on this piece oozes talent and passion for the genre. Definitely recommend this!
