AC/DC- BACK TO SCHOOL DAYS: Towson State College, Maryland 1979- CD- 2015-
- Smokin’ Production- 823564668826- 400 grn
This concert, originally captured for the King Biscuit Flower Hour, is classic Bon Scott era AC/DC, and one of the few professional live recordings that includes material from Highway To Hell. Opening with ‘Live Wire,’ the group barrels through many of their earlier classics. AC/DC had been in existence for six years and had released as many albums when they recorded this rollicking show at Towson State College, near Baltimore, Maryland. The band was in its prime, with vocalist Bon Scott leading the group through what would later be viewed as some of their strongest material, with the Young Brothers (Angus and Malcolm) driving the guitar-boogie riffs at full throttle. The band had just released Highway To Hell, the album that would break the entertaining Aussie band worldwide, and was burning up the rock radio charts with a platter of classics that included "Girl's Got Rhythm," "Touch Too Much," and the title track. Sadly, four months later, Bon Scott would drink himself to death and the band would be thrown into complete turmoil. The Young Brothers and the remaining members, however, would regroup and re-emerge with new singer Brian Johnson in 1980, as well as a new album, Back In Black. AC/DC, as we all know, went on to superstar status, but there are those that say the Bon Scott version will never be surpassed.
PERSONNEL: Bon Scott – lead vocals; Angus Young – lead guitar; Malcolm Young – rhythm guitar, backing vocals; Cliff Williams – bass guitar, backing vocals; Phil Rudd – drums, percussion.
Oh, man, this takes us back. Back to the days when we watched the Paris gig on VHS and listened to If You Want Blood You've Got It. The rawness, the energy and the pure damned excitement of a band that was just going balls out. Bon interacts with the crowd like the crowd pleaser he was and the band play like demented banshees. Bloody brilliant. Sound quality is pretty good. To be honest it's not much worse than If You Want Blood You've Got It. And it's live. Proper live that is. Warts and all. And despite that it's good. Bon sings well - with only the odd croak when really going for it on ''Whole Lotta Rosie''. This record comes from that golden AC/DC era between 1977 and 1986 when they simply knocked out great banging records with vast amounts of energy both on and off stage. This concert seriously rocked and it was so loud and roudy. After concert there were so many broken beer bottles strewn across the parking lot, lots of destruction, and after that University officials banned any more hard/metal bands from appearing again at the Center. Anyway, if you are a fan then buy this. It really is a great live record of an outstanding era of an outstanding band. 100% High Octane Rock And Roll !!!
