Various Artists- THE ROOTS OF AC/DC- CD- 2009- Snapper Music- 636551008228- 400 grn
You can view THE ROOTS OF AC/DC in two ways: a genuine attempt to delve into the musical influences of one of the biggest rock bands in the world, or the latest cynical step in prolonging the life of a series which has been lying on its death bed for some time. But there's no escaping the quality of this compilation. Long standing problem with the Complete Blues/Roots Series - the direct link between the subject matter of the albums and the material they contain. And THE ROOTS OF AC/DC is no exception. The fact the Young brothers were attracted to the rambunctious rock and roll of the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Chuck Berry, after all, like the latter, Angus has spent a lifetime duck-walking across stages all around the world, but the blues artists included here feel out of place. The band have gone on record stating their interest in the blues originated from their love of The Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton but, of course, the copyright costs of including material by those artists is way out of the budget label's league. Instead what we have here in John Lee Hooker, Elmore James, Howlin' Wolf and B.B. King are the influences of influences. Not that it makes for a bad album – in fact quite the opposite. It's almost a mandatory requirement for every rock band to cover Big Joe Williams' "Baby Please Don't Go" and AC/DC tipped their hat on High Voltage. Elsewhere they also covered Chuck Berry's "School Days" on TNT – highly appropriate given Angus' penchant for short trousers and school caps. As for the rest, they just provide an indication of the kind of music the band were interested in, rather than material they actually covered. It's refreshing to hear John White's version of "The House Of The Rising Sun" and Blind Boy Fuller's "Get Your Yas Yas Ou"t will never lose its shine. But it's the languorous Louis Armstrong performing "St. James Infirmary" and the ruthless "44 Blues" by Roosevelt Sykes which live longest in the memory. THE ROOTS OF AC/DC manages to be an excellent album without ever really creating the impression of being closely link ed to the Australian rockers. But when has accuracy ever got in the way of Snapper Music compiling an album? Snapper's THE ROOTS OF AC/DC collects twenty slabs of early R&B, rock 'n' roll and electric blues to help illuminate the creation of one of hard rock's most enduring cases of arrested development. While many would cite sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll as the trinity of beacons that led the Aussie rockers to pick up their instruments, it was likely the hedonistic sounds emitting from 1950s American radio that drove them to salute "those about to rock" – Angus Young made Chuck Berry's signature "duck walk" part of his act from day one. As compilations go, THE ROOTS OF AC/DC could just as easily be called "Roots Of Rock 'N' Roll," as it's populated with enough heavy hitters like John Lee Hooker, Little Richard, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, and the aforementioned Chuck Berry to warrant multiple spins in the Rock 'N' Roll Hall Of Fame gift shop.
